Middle East Situation Report #13
(as of 1100 EST, 12 January 1984)
LEBANON/SYRIA
Druze leader Walid Junblatt told Ambassador Bartholomew last
Monday that he believes President Gemayel is blocking
implementation of the security plan and preparing for another
round of fighting. Junblatt claims that he would accept the plan
if the Lebanese Army moved out of two key positions on the Alayh
ridgeline and promoted the Druze and Muslim officers who were
recently passed over.
-- This is the first indication that the Druze believe the
Lebanese Government ma be tr in to undermine the
proposed plan.
Junblatt reportedly is going to Moscow today at the
invitation of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party
to discuss the situation in Lebanon.
-- Junblatt's visit is probably intended to bolster his
image as a Lebanese political figure.
PERSIAN GULF
Europe will be targets' of Iranian-sponsored terrorism.

The new President of Aramco, a Saudi, has told the US Consul
in Dhahran that stronger security measures have been implemented
at Aramco installations as a result of the theft of Aramco ID 25X1
cards and vehicle decals. The US Consul believes that security
at some installations is still inadequate.
An official of the Saudi Foreign Ministry has asked the
US Embassy in Jidda to request increased security for Saudi
facilities in the US against terrorist operations. The Saudis
have asked to be informed of specific steps taken.
The US plans to send 40 Marines and 24 Stinger hand-held
surface-to-air missiles to US naval forces near Lebanon and in
the Persian Gulf region this weekend to counter Iranian military
and terrorist threats. Plans call for Stinger teams to be in
Bahrain by Sunday.
