1. SIGNIFICANCE:
THIS BOARD DEPICTS A NEWLY CONSTRUCTED PROBABLE AMMUNITION STORAGE FACILITY,
THE FIRST SUCH FACILITY CONSTRUCTED IN NORTH VIETNAM SINCE U.S. AIR STRIKES
BEGAN IN 1964.
3. BACKGROUND:
U.S. AIRSTRIKES AGAINST AMMUNITION STORAGE FACILITIES BEGAN IN EARLY
1965 AFTER INITIAL STRIKES WERE MADE IN AUGUST OF 1964 AGAINST SELECTED NORTH
VIETNAMESE NAVAL BASES. SINCE THEN ALL SUCH STORAGE FACILITIES IN THE PANHANDLE
AREA HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. PHOTO COVERAGE OF REVEALED THIS 25X1
AMMUNITION STORAGE TO BE IN A MID-STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION.
OF 10 FEBRUARY 1969 REVEALS 225X1
A PROBABLE AMMUNITION STORAGE FACILITY LOCATED 4.4 NM SW OF DONG HOI. THE FACILITY
CONSISTS OF 34 PARTIALLY REVETTED STORAGE BUILDINGS ;J20 WITH TWO COVERED ENTRANCES
AND POSSIBLE VENTS AND 11 WITH ONE COVERED ENTRANCE) THREE SUPPORT BUILDINGS
CONNECTED BY A PERSONNEL TRENCH. AND TWO EXCAVATIONS FOR ADDITIONAL BUILDINGS.
