ELECTRONICS EQUIPMENT
LOURDES MILITARY HEADQUARTERS TORRENS, CUBA
1. SIGNIFICANCE: First identification of ELINT equipment, a new COMINT
electronic site under construction, and mobile parabolic dishes,
possibly satellite related, in Cuba.
2. REMARKS:I I, newly identified ELINT equipment was observed
in two separately secured areas near the administration area at Lourdes
Military Headquarters Torrens. This equipment included a MESH BRICK, a
possible BOX BRICK, and an unidentified probable ECM. The new COMINT
electronic site is a probable modified FIX-24 under construction near a
FIX-24 site previously identified at this installation. Initial
construction on the control building for the new array was evident in
May 1974.
Two newly identified mobile parabolic dishes, possibly satellite
related, were at a newly constructed, separately secured area near the
headquarters building. Each dish is approximately 15 feet in diameter and
mounted on a gun-mount-type chassis atop a drive-up platform. The dishes
are emplaced at right angles to one another adjacent to the southeast
corner of a large square control building. This is the first identification
of these parabolic dishes outside the Soviet Union.
Possible satellite-related equipment previously identified at this
installation included a possible optical tracking tower and a possible
telemetry antenna. Associated communications equipment includes a single
rhombic receiving antenna.
A new electronics facility, possibly associated with this installation,
is under construction 2.4 nautical miles (nm) south-southeast of the
headquarters (not depicted on graphic). This facility was previously
identified as Torrens Possible Sam Site
