These maps, all available through the NPIC Map Library, vary in their content, scale, size, date of production, and publisher. They were selected for inclusion in this document because of their possible utility in the imagery exploitation process. (U) Most of the maps listed in this publication are produced by the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) or the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and are available for retention. NPIC personnel may order maps or submit map-related requests through the NPIC Map Library in Room 15300. Requests should identify maps by series and sheet number. Some maps are available on a loan basis only; however, reproductions are available for retention. Orders for loan maps should give the complete call number. (U) The scale of a map, usually expressed as a ratio, describes the relationship between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground. The choice of map scale depends on the intended use of the map. Scale determines the amount of detail shown on a map. A large-scale map shows more detail but less land area, while a small-scale map shows less detail but a larger land area. For example: Large-scale maps (more detail, less area): 1:10,000-1:25,000 Medium-scale maps: 1:50,000-1:250,000 Small-scale maps (less detail, more area): 1:500,000-1:22,000,000 The terms large- and small-scale are comparative, rather than absolute, so there are no precise definitions of the boundaries between them. Maps of continental areas and the world are all in small scale, however, and town plans are in large scale. The Sandinista revolution has brought numerous political, economic, and social changes to Nicaragua, keeping the country in the fore- front of international interest.' (U) Official Name Republic of Nicaragua' (U) Type Republic2 (U) Capital Managua2 (U) Political Subdivisions One national district and 16 departments; in 1982, the Sandinistas established six regions and three special zones, which both the government and the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) increasingly use for administrative purposes.2 (U) Area Geography and Climate Nicaragua's area of 57,143 square miles (about the size of Wisconsin) includes two large fresh- water lakes, Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua, which together total about 3,500 square miles. The country's three geographic sections are the Pacific coastal plain and its low mountain ranges near the sea, the higher mountainous area running northwest to southeast, and the flat Atlantic plain.' (U) 148,000 sq km total area/1,220 km boundary land: 500/0 forest; 7?0 arable; 7?,/ prairie and pasture; 36?/u urban, waste, or other' (U) Limits of territorial waters (claimed): 200 nm; (fishing, 200 nm; continental shelf, including sovereignty over superjacent waters) 910 km coastline2 (U) Most of the population is in western Nicaragua, the political and commercial heart of the country. Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua dominate this area. The region also contains many extinct and a few semiactive volcanoes, some with peaks up to 5,000 feet. The mountainous area northeast of the lakes is more sparsely populated but provides a large part of Nicaragua's coffee and cattle production. This region, accessible by lateral spur roads from the Inter-American Highway, has several gold mines. Eastern Nicaragua's climate varies with altitude and season. In Managua, sununer lasts from mid-November to mid-May and is hot and dry. Winter (mid-May to mid-Novem- ber) is hot and humid with short, heavy tropical showers which may occur daily, often accompanied by violent electrical storms. Streams flood in the rainy season and are dry the rest of the year. The average daily temperature in Managua ranges from 93?F to 79?F. Nights are temperate. Tempera- tures in the mountains can go as low as 61?F, while the east coast may be as warm as 84?F.1 (U) Nicaraguan geography was not changed by the 1972 earthquake or the 1979 revolution. Mana- gua's physical layout, however, was considerably altered. Despite being the nation's capital and largest city, Managua has no central business or shopping district as such and lacks a sense of being an urban area.' The estimate is 2.9 million; for Managua, 716,000. Most Nicaraguans are of Hispanic origin, but some isolated, distinct ethnic communities still exist-primarily Sumo, Rama, and Misquito Indians and Caribbean Blacks in the eastern sector of the country.' They can be valuable tools in preparing briefings and for illustrating reports. (U) CIA produces the following base maps of Nicaragua for retention: Accession Number Scale Size Date Class 504507 1:3,500,000 8 x 10 1980 U 504013 1:1,500,000 16 x 18 1979 U Briefing Maps In many instances, maps are an essential part of an oral presentation. There are many types of reaps used for briefing that illustrate visual description or show significant detail. Some maps are more suitable than others for this purpose. These maps were selected for this category because of their distinctive presentation of administrative divisions, major transportation routes, major cities, and size. (U) CIA produces the following briefing maps of Nicaragua for retention: Accession Number Scale Size Date Class 504508 1:3,500,000 8 x 10 1980 U 504012 1:1,500,000 16 x 25 1979 U Aeronautical Maps These maps have special overprints and intelligence to monitor international air/ground tactical operation, operational planning, and training. They are essential to aerospace navigation of high- performance weapons systems. Other uses include visual and radio navigation, the monitoring of radio emissions and other electronic devices, plotting, mission planning, and intelligence briefings. Each version is identified in the lower margin of the map as joint Operations Graphic (Air), Joint Operations Graphic (Ground) or Joint Operations Graphic (Radar). The JOG-Air series contains detailed information on air-related facilities such as runway lengths and patterns, radio facilities, and obstructions. Terrain elevation in each 15-minute quadrangle is identified by large open-faced figures shown in the legend. Elevations and contours are given in feet. (U) The JOG-Ground series is prepared for use by ground units, and only stable or permanent air facilities are identified. Elevations and contours are located in the same position as on the air version, but are given in meters. (S/NF) DMA has scheduled for completion in FY 86 the following: Joint Operations Graphic (Air), Series 1501A; ND 16-11, ND 16-12, and ND 16-15. (S/NF) Production of a new series (E001) 1:250,000 scale is scheduled for distribution by December 1984. There will be a total of seven sheets published in this series, and only three of them will cover Nicaragua (ND 16-10, ND 16-11 and ND 16-15). These are satellite-image maps showing the earth's surface as recorded in multispectral (multicolor) form by the LANDSAT 4 thematic mapper. They will be printed on the reverse of the joint Operations Graphic (Ground), Series 1501G. (S/NF) DMA has selected for expansion and revision Series E751, 1:50,000 scale topographic maps of Nicara- gua. Nine sheets were completed in 1983, 52 were completed in 1984, and 20 more are scheduled for completion in FY 85. This series will be considered complete and have the the latest large-scale map coverage available. (S/NF) The NPIC Map Library is continuing to work closely with the Cartography Center, Map Services Division, DMA, and other map producing agencies to procure the most current maps available in support of imagery exploitation requirements.
