The maps vary in their content, scale, sire, date of production, and publisher. They were selected for inclusion in this document because of their possible utility in the imagery exploitation process. (U) Most of the maps listed in this publication are produced by the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) and CIA, and they are available for retention. To order, they should be identified by series and sheet designation or accession number. Some maps are only available on a loan basis; however, xerox or photographic copies can be obtained. When ordering loan maps, the com- plete call number should be given. (U) The scale of a map describes the relationship between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground. Scale is usually expressed as a ratio. Your choice of map scald depends on how you intend to use the map. Scale determines the amount of detail shown on a map. A large-scale map shows more detail but less area, while asmall-scale map shows less do tail but a larger land area. For example: Large-scale maps: More detail, less area 1:10,000-1:25,000 Medium scale. maps: 1:50;000-1:250,000 Small scale maps: Less detail, more area 1:500,000-1:22,000,000 the terms large and small scale are comparative, rather than absolute, so there are no precise definitions of the boundaries between them. Maps of continental areas and the world are all Base Maps Base maps are basic outline maps that show major cities, transportation and administrative divisions. They can be valuable tools in preparing briefings and for illustrating reports. These maps also show major cities, transportation and administrative divisions. (U) Complete topographic map coverage of EI Salvador is available in various large, medium, and small scale series. At some scales, however, it is necessary to combine two or more series in order to compile a set of maps reflecting complete coverage at the latest date available. (U) 1:250,000 Scale Maps The Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) produces two versions of the 1501-Joint Operations Graphic (JOG) series of EI Salvador. Each version is identified in the lower margin of the map as Joint Operations Graphic (Air) or Joint Operations Graphic (Ground). (U) The JOG-Air series contains detailed information on air-related facilities such as runway lengths and patterns, radio facilities, and obstructions. Terrain elevation in each 15 minute quad- rangle is identified by large open-face figures shown in the legend. Elevations and contours are given in feet. (U) The JOG-Ground series is prepared for use by ground units, and only stable or permanent air facilities are identified. Elevations and contours are located in the same positions as on the air version, but are given in meters. (U) Foreign-produced maps show detailed topographic information and provide an abundance of place names. These are published by the Instituto Geografico Nacional of EI Salvador. In addition to detailed topographic information, these sheets provide an abundance of place names. The entire country is covered in six sheets. The call number of this series is C308-30, 262250. The most recent Post Report available on EI Salvador is dated 1979. (U) Embassy Maps As a result of the American Embassy takeover in Iran, and associated map requests in support of imagery exploitation requirements, the NPIC Map Library, maintains a file of selected Ameri- can Embassy compounds and building floor plans. Seven new 1:50,000 sheets of the EI Salvador/Honduras border were placed in production in FY-82, and should be completed by December 1983. The series identification is E753, EI Salvador: 2257-I, 2258-I and II, 2356-I, 2357-IV and 2456-I and IV. Fifteen more 1:50,000 sheets have been scheduled for production in FY-83.
