Govornmu nt troops are taking advantage of the
withda:awal of some Communitit forces from Takeo to
unc1oitake a small clearing operation along Route 2.
Seve ral. battalions began moving south along the
highway on 21 May in an Attempt to regain control of
a village a few miles from Takao. In the northwest,
other government forces are trying to reopen Route 5
between Phnotn Penh and Kompong Chhnang but are making
only slight progress in the face of moderate resistance.
Communist attacks on three government positions along
a section of Route 4 some 20 miles east of the seaport
at Kompong Scm have temporarily closed that vital
highway, according to a preliminary report. Although 25X1
the attacking forces apparently have withdrawn, truck
convoys scheduled for 22 May have been
canceled
