/Adpro d 4riQ dde 2005/08/ ~/_C_ S F 4 25X1 No. 1539/71 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Directorate of Intelligence 21 August 1971 BOLIVIA (Situation Report as of 1830 EDT) 25X1 1. Small arms firing is increasing in La Paz and there is the danger that the US Embassy may be attacked. 2- President Torres w"s given ano er ultimatum to leave the country at 1530 hours today. Only the presidential guard in La Paz continues to support him and weapons are being distributed by his supporters to anyone on the streets of the capital willing to defend the regime. 3. The official radio network continues to broadcast inflammatory orders, calling for violence against the rebel forces and several clashes have occurred. 4. Although Torres-'military support is dissipating, his support from leftist workers, miners and students appears firm. Whether these people will fight for Torres, if he leaves the country, remains to be seen but the prospect for further violence is increasing. Already there are reports of casualties and the radio is calling for doctors and nurses as well as medical supplies. Approved For Releas C 11, 25X1
