Jordan Bureau began daily coverage of the new Palestinian radio broadcasting from Baghdad, Voice of the PLO, on 1 November, its first day of experimental transmission. Although reception was generally fair, the new radio, which utilizes existing Iraqi facilities, initially suffered from some interference from Moscow. However, reception improved significantly after 18 November, when the Voice of the PLO switched to a different frequency, thus avoiding the interference problem. With consistently good reception in Amman, after the frequency change, the station is proving very productive, even during its experimental period of 1 hour of broadcasting per day. According to a Saudi newspaper and other reports, beginning early in the new year the Voice of the PLO is to extend its broadcast and begin utilizing a new transmitter located in western Iraq, near the border with Jordan. 2. At the request of FCS, Jordan and Gulf bureaus conducted reception checks of the Voice of Palestine and Voice of the PLO broadcasts emanating from Baghdad, San'a' and Aden to determine whether there would be any advantage to trading coverage respon- sibilities.. Reception of the programs at Jordan Bureau was consistently fair or better throughout the 8-22 November exercise. Recruiting efforts to bring the Bureau's monitoring staff up to T/O took a small step forward in November with completion of testing and interviewing of a promising Arabic monitor candidate, Approved For Release 2008/04/01 : CIA-RDP86-00040R000100060002-7 Approved For Release 2008/04/01: CIA-RDP86-00040R000100060002-7 Y ~I J 11 lqe Iii `~/ MJN-8231 Page Two began preemployment processing in the last few days of November and is expected to EOD in December.
