MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, FBIS
THROUGH Chief, Operations Group
SUBJECT Jordan Bureau Monthly Report - June 1982
A. Ambassador Viets called a special meeting of
Embassy staff and their dependents on 24 June to discuss
the Lebanese situation and the possible impact it might
have on the Embassy and U.S. citizens in Jordan. While
saying that no trouble was expected, the Ambassador advised
people to take special precautions on the way to and from
work and to ensure that they were thoroughly familiar with
the Embassy security procedures.
B. A march by students on the Embassy never got off
the ground 30 June when they found that there were as many
security men at the appointed gathering place as there were
students.
C. An increase in the number of military personnel
assigned to the Defense Attache's Office threatened to present
a space problem within the Embassy until the Ambassador came
up with what he thought was the perfect solution--have seven
AID personnel move in with FBIS for 6 months, or even perma-
nently. The grand plan called for two people to take over
the secretary's office, another the kitchen, a third the
technician's shop and three more plus the displaced tech the
shipping and property offices next door simply by punching a
couple of doors through the cement wall. Both the FBIS Chief
and the AID Director throught it was a "terrific" plan and
immediately began gathering facts and figures to scuttle it.
Two days later the Ambassador conceded defeat but no one is
quite sure whether he did it because it was cheaper to rent
AID office space rather than remodeling FBIS or because he
didn't cotton to 18 hungry Arabs grumbling at him.
A. Monitorial/Editorial
1. Following the attack on the Israeli ambassador
in the UK and the subsequent Israeli attack on Beirut, Duty
Editor contacted the DCM at the American
School baseball field, informed him of the situation and then
met him upon his arrival at the Embassy with the relevant

material organized and the most important passages marked.
She then assisted him in establishing his priorities and
contacting the appropriate people. In appreciation, the
DCM sent a memo to FBIS commending for her "excellent STAT
support."
2. As of 4 June, the Bureau expanded its operating
hours in order to cover Syrian media from sign-on to sign-
off, and from 9-13 June was operating 24 hours a day during
the height of the Lebanese crisis.
3. Since 7 June, VOP has been inaudible here,
resulting in Nicosia assuming our evening coverage of VOP
while we have been taking its Cairo MENA and Domestic Service
from 0500 to 2200 GMT. In addition, Gulf has assumed our
coverage of Santa Domestic and SUNA.
4. The Embassy in Damascus became so inundated with
material during the Lebanese war that a minimize on all traffic
was put into effect. However, after FBIS cut way back on its
filing, the Embassy realized just how much it depended on FBIS
material, saying that the lack of it hampered its own reporting,
and requested that we resume filing on the Lebanese crisis and
Syria immediately.
5. Various offices in the Embassy here have also
expressed appreciation for FBIS material. The Political Section
passed all material on military movements to the DAO, which found
it invaluable in plotting the progress of the war on its wall
map. The Ambassador also praised FBIS, singling it out at
a country team meeting for its-"excellent support" and "timely
reporting" during the current crisis.
6. As a result of the Lebanese crisis, three times
the usual amount of teletype paper was used during the month.
