MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, FBIS
THROUGH : Chief, Operations Group
SUBJECT : Monthly Report--Nicosia Bureau--December 1982
Bureau employees and their spouses shared a Cypriot "meze" on the night
of the 15th at a Nicosia restaurant to mark the beginning of the holiday
season. In addition, many embassy personnel, including Acting Charge Jim
Tull, attended a bureau party on the 22d, where they were able to sample
a wide range of exotic dishes prepared by bureau employees for the occasion.
On a soberin note, an intruder broke into house at STAT
midmonth while was still on home leave but was confronted by an embassy STAT
carpenter who had been sent to do repairs. After a lengthy chase by the
carpenter, the intruder managed to escape butter apprehended by the
police. Fortunately, nothing was stolen from house. As a result of STAT
the incident, the carpenter received an award from Ambassador Ewing, and
the local police force has been asked to check embassy houses regularly
when the occupants are absent.
We have run an ad in two local newspapers this month for the monitorial
vacancy created by the resignation of Arabic monitor
who has tendered his resignation effective 13 January. So far the response
has been poor.
A. Monitorial/Editorial
The embassy in Cairo provided the bureau with three audio
tapes of the Cairo Domestic Television program "Face the
Press." The bureau processed and filed all three programs,
which dealt with Egyptian economic issues.
B. Lateral Services
The embassy in Paris, via London Bureau, on 20 December
requested that the bureau file an AFP report and any
subsequent reportage on the sessions of the People's Tribunal
on Afghanistan being held in Paris. The bureau had already
filed the item, but refiledit to Paris and to additional
consumers, as requested.
C. Technical
The bureau's primary communications circuit was restored on
7 December, after malfunctioning equipment had
been repaired. During the outage, which began on 21 November,
we had been using the Nicosia-Caversham commercial circuit.
