SUBJECT . Monthly Report--Seoul Bureau--November 1982
A. Monitorial/Editorial
1. Deputy Chief has beguna daily review of the
bureau's file. In addition to marking copy7orrgeneral perusal by
editors and monitors, he has been holding individual meetings with
bureau personnel to discuss their work.
V2. The Korean unit has started a chart of appearances and
speeches by major DPRK leaders. Given the frequent disappearances
and reappearances of such people as Kim Il and Kim Chong-il, and
continuing rumors of purges in the leadership over the succession
issue, the unit daily is listing leader appearances as well as
charting which leaders appear most frequently with Kim Il-song and
Kim Chong-il.
3. The South Korean Government recently announced a decision
to utilize the McCune-Reischauer transliteration system as the
official system. This decision was welcomed by the bureau which uses
the same system.
4. On 7 November the Chinese Unit began scrutinizing and
processing from the five PRC regional newspapers coverage of which
had been transferred from Hong Kong Bureau. This additional work,
the unit's first experience with press coverage, helped to boost the
unit's total monthly wordage by 50 percent.
1. The bureau was forced to switch to its Mode V backup
communications system more frequently than usual during the month.
The bureau's primary circuit was inoperative several times during
the month because of maintenance work ater Hurricane
Iwa was the cause of difficulties at the Hawaii relay station.
