Approved For Release 2008/06/02 : CIA-RDP86-0004OR000100210006-6 FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE HONG KONG BUREAU MHK-3009 9 August 1983 MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, Foreign Broadcast Information Service THROUGH: Chief, Operations Group SUBJECT: Monthly Report -- Hong Kong Bureau -- July 1983 -- Two RE&CD representatives visited the bureau during the month and completed drawings for the two floors the bureau will occupy. Bureau personnel have nearly completed designs for the TV and editorial rooms, the shop and the comcenter and will obtain costs for the new furniture that will be needed. Most of the additional security equip- ment required has been purchased locally. The technicians have tested a pane of the glass used in the windows at to insure that the sun screening material would not affect microwave transmissions. The tests showed no signal attenuation. Anchors Away -- The consulate's boat met its demise at the end of the month. The boat had been given to the American Employee's Association by a Hong Kong family in October. Income from use of the boat could not keep pace with increasing repair and upkeep costs. Weather in Hong Kong has been generally inclement since the boat was acquired, significantly reducing its use. Editorial/Monitorial 1. Deng's Works -- The highlight of the month was the 1 July release of the 397-page collection of speeches and articles by PRC leader Deng Xiaoping covering the period 1975-82. The bureau procured copies of the book from Beijing for itself, AG, NEAD, Okinawa and Seoul and translated ten articles from the 1981-82 period from the book plus nine others from PRC central and provincial media, totaling over 60,000 words. 2. Book Procurement -- After reading of a headquarters' consumer's difficulty in acquiring a much desired copy of a book on China's financial problemq released in August 1982, the bureau located a copy of the book, ZHONGG90 CAIZHENG WENTI, and pouched it to headquarters.
