Approved For Release 2008/06/02 : CIA-RDP86-0004OR000100210007-5 FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE HONG KONG BUREAU MHK-3008 7 July 1983 MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, Foreign Braodcast Information Service THROUGH: Chief, Operations Group SUBJECT: Monthly Report -- Hong Kong Bureau -- June 1983 signed on 22 June. The consulate will have floors IU-14 wit FBIS occupying the 13th and 14th floors. The top seven floors have been taken by the building's management company. Rough floor plans have been drawn up and a security survey of the new premises has been completed. An architect design firm will be chosen soon so plans for interior con- struction can go ahead. Progress -- The lease agreement on uilding was When It Rains -- On 17 June Hong Kong suffered its worst torrential rains in almost 20 years. The storm caused deaths, flooding and landslides throughout the colony and made most dayshift employees hours late for work. Because of the scarcity of public transportation the consulate closed at 1230 local time to allow employees plenty of time to get home. All PRC provincial radios were inaudible for part of the day and Okinawa had to be called on to provide backstop assistance. By late afternoon the storm had abated and evening shift employees were able to get to work without too much difficulty. STAT 1. Promotions -- The bureau's junior technician promoted to FSN-5. Monitors FSN-9 and to FSN-8. was were promoted to STAT STAT STAT STAT STAT 2. QSI -- Monitor) was awarded a quality step increase in recognition of the fine job he did filling in as th ring- Contract Translations unit chief for two months during recent surgery and recuperation. 3. Resignation -- Associate editor) (resigned effective 25 June. She is presently doing contract translations for the bureau. Never Say Die -- This year's consulate ladies dragon boat team again reached the finals of the annual dragon boat races held at Stanley main beach. Ably assisted by the ladies team placed fourt in a ina s. The men's team unaided by FBIS, was rammed in the first heat, causing the helmsman to lose his oar. Bereft of their steering mechanism, the men then rammed the neighboring boat, propelling that helmsman. into Stanley Bay. and severing their own boat's dragon head. Rapidly recovering their dragon head from the water, the consulate men raced to a furious third in the heat, thus qualifying for the Plate competition which they went on to win hands down.
