Approved For Release 2008/03/19: CIA-RDP86-000408000100260004-3 MNC-30~ 11 October 1983 MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, FBIS THROUGH Chief, Operations Group SUBJECT Monthly Report--Nicosia Bureau--September 1983 The intensive military and political activity in Lebanon, culminating in the cease-fire on the 26th, boosed the bureau's monthly wordage (776,900) to its highest level since the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar as-Sadat in October 1981, when a record 826,900 words were filed. Events in Cyprus also contributed to the heavy file as a result of the visit of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, President Kiprianou's acceptance of UN Secretary General Perez de Cuellar's Cyprus initiative, and the resignation of Foreign Minister Rolandhis. Cyprus' role in the Lebanese crisis was also hotly debated throughout the month because of the use of Larnaca Airport and the British sovereign base at Akrotiri to transport supplies to the multinational force. The debate intensified with the forced landing at Akrotiri on the 16th of two Lebanese Air Force planes that had just completed missions over the Lebanese mountains. A "meze" dinner held on the 16th to welcome incoming bureau chief offered bureau staffers to intances with former Cyprus hands and who were visiting the island at the time. On the 19t assador and Mrs Loring and embassy employees joined the bureau staff at an international buffet Hail and Farewell party at the bureau for Monitorial/Editorial 1. The bureau's editorial hours were changed to 0600-2300 GMT effective 25 September when Nicosia reverted to winter time. 2. A clandestine station believed to represent the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party was first monitored on the 20th making an experimental transmission. The bureau is conducting frequent checks of the station until its broadcasting schedule and progralmning can be determined and a firm decision on coverage can be made.
