SUBJECT $ Monthly Report - London Bureau - April 1985
i. The overthrow of the Numayri regime in Sudan and resulting
shifting relationships in the region, lengthy speeches by
Libya's Al-Qadhdhafi and Afghanistan's Karmal, and the gathering
of the bloc clan for the ceremonial extension of the Warsaw Pact
Treaty were some of the month's events that helped produce the
highest ever bureau wordage for April. The month's total -
3,010,260 - was also the second highest file in the bureau's
history, surpassed only by the February 1961 file, and only the
second time that the daily average has run to six figures.
Communications Supervisor Denis Dibley remarked with awe, and
relief, that the commo section would have been unable to handle
this volume without the assistance of the CAA6-L computer header
program.
2. PM's Mang/Telecutter tapes also made a substantial contribution
to the commo section's efforts with a new record of 167 items,
12X of the PMJ file, on tape. The Mang system also cut In half
PMU's processing of the Soviet May Day slogans, which were an
edited and renumbered version of the October Revolution
anniversary slogans stored in the Wang.

Cologne Unit began its contribution to the "Cities" TV taping
project last month and will be refining and expanding its role
as video equipment is received and installed.

The offices of the Chief Editor and the Chief Engineer were
spruced up with wall repairs and painting, winding up a

Bureau's associate had a two-day orientation TDY;

in the embassy; Gulf Bureau Chief made a two-day
stopover an route to Bahrain from the bureau chiefs' conference for
discussions with Adain in London and the BSC at Caversham; editor
had a one-day TDY an route to Abdijan Bureau for a PCS
ass gnmen ; and bureau Senior Associate Editor spent
four days on attachment to BBC Hewsburo, a productive association
which will improve understanding and coordination.

Islamabad an 4 April; Bureau Chie was in Washington 12-25
April for the bureau chiefs' conference; and Admi n Officer
left on the 27th for TDY visits to Jordan and Austria bureaus.
