The time is approaching when the Logistics Career Service will select and nominate personnel for overseas assignments during 1971. As it has been in the past, it is anticipated that many more persons will desire an assignment overseas than the number of positions will permit. This year the competition will be sharper, and the selected candidates must be more qualified because of changes which have occurred over the past few years. 2. An increasing number of persons are finding overseas assignments more and more attractive because of the challenging nature of the work and the adven- ture of .foreign living and travel. On the other hand, thf; number of logistics positions overseas has been steadily reduc r the ast few ears, going from STATINTL in 1968 to the current level o posi- tions over a 2-year period. 3. In addition to the greater number of personnel vying for fewer jobs, the competition has been made even greater by the recent identification of^logistics positions in which a foreign language capability will be :required in the future. Persons selected to fill these positions will be required to study the language and to achieve an established level of proficiency. 4. With the increased competition and added language requirements, a Logistics Career Service employee would enhance his c;hances for selection if he demonstrated the initiative to begin language training on his own. While such study may enhance one`s chance for selection, it is by :no means to be the only criteria to be considered. An individual may study a language and not be selected far overseas rotation, but I assure you that the display of initiative will not be STATI NTL lost. Any questions regarding la.ngua ere uirements ;should be directed to the Office of Logistics Training Officer, n extension 2657.
