Track panels assemble and disassemble quickly
When the country's first auto-train be-
gan operating recently between Vir-
ginia and Florida, the runs started and
ended on prefabricated steel track
placed at a rate of up to more than
4,000 ft per day. L. B. Foster Co. intro-
duced the panels to the U.S. a year and
a half ago and has supplied them for
over 60 installations. But the 4 miles of
auto-train spurs are the largest job yet.
Called Fastrak, the panels have stan-
dard rails secured to steel ties by clamps
that are held in place by wedges. Nor-
mally they are assembled in 39-ft sec-
tions, however some 49-ft lengths were
placed at the auto-train terminal at
Sanford, Fla., near Disney World.
Foster has an automated assembly
rig carried on a flatbed trailer to the
most convenient location. It fabricates
all panels straight. To curve them up to
20 deg, workers knock out the wedges
and just move the track with a crane or
tractor. For sharper curves, rails must
be precurved and the components are
shipped disassembled.
The panels, weighing 5,000 to 6,000
lb, depending on the rail size, are up to
30% lighter than wood-tie systems be-
cause the inverted channel ties are more
LA
widely spaced, says Herbert N. Lucas,
manager of Foster's track department.
They are cheaper than using wood ties
and tie plates except for very light rail,
he says, and a four-man crew with a
small crane can place them. Lucas also
says they are cheaper, lighter and more
durable than concrete ties.
Steel panels have lasted at least 50
years on main lines in Europe, he says,
but they would short out signaling sys-
tems commonly used in this country,
which depend on insulated rails. So
they are intended for construction,
mining and industrial lines in the U.S.
Since they have standard rail joints, the
panels can be quickly disassembled and
moved. L.B. FOSTER CO., SEVEN PARK-
WAY CENTER, PITTSBURGH, PA. 15220.

Meter meter
New version of Model 3800B distance me-
ter measures in meters rather than feet. It
uses an invisible beam of infrared light to
measure distances of up to 2 miles. Model
3800A measures in feet. HEWLETT-PACKARD

Self-help level
An automatic level, with accuracy approxi-
mating that of an 18-in. engineer's level, re-
quires no leveling screws or telescope vial.
Rough leveling to a circular vial is done by
tilting unit on a ball and socket bearing.
The compensator automatically brings the

acts before smoke or fire is apparent, uses
the ionization principle rather than smoke,
heat or flame for activation, says the manu-
facturer. A fire gives off more than twice as
much invisible products as it does visible

which the detector reacts. The unit has a
small, electrical current trickling between
two charged plates. Any combustion prod-
uct interrupts the current and activates an
alarm. COMMERCIAL DIVISION OF HONEY-
