Examinations for the resorption of the diamines
from the benzidine group in an
indu.,trial plant were carried out. They
concerned the determination of its con-
centration in the air, the contamination of
clothes and skin, and the excretion of
frf.-e diamines in urine. The findings are
cited. The diamine concentrations in
urine ranged in winter from 20 to 276 pg./I
(average 96 pg./I.). in summer 20-794
tig.11. (average 224 mg.11.). The increase of
diamine concentrations in urine during
the week was stated; the increase in summer was
235%. It was proved that this
was due to increasing contamination. with
benzirline, of the workers' skin during
the week, connected with the bad hygienic
conditions in the plant. An attempt was
made to induce stringeot hygienic conditions in
the employees' group, and it is
stated that, as a result, the benzidine
excretion in urine diminished by 50% at
least. The skin plays the dominant role in the
resorption process of the benzidine
group and its derivatives. According to the
authors' evaluation in the investigated
plant, only 10-201,. of diamines are resorbed by
the respiratory tract, the rest
heing resorbed mainly through the skin. The
authors discuss the problem connect-
ed with hazard estimation on the basis of
benzidine excretion in urine, as well as
the problem of industrial standards for the
concentrations in air (if diamines of
the benzidine group, which according to the
authors should no,, behigherthan 0.1 ing.
I u L' -
cu. m. The authot's suggest that more attention be paid to the
hygienic prophylactic
methods, and that benzidine production be stopped in summer, when
the resorp-
tion through the skin Increases dangerously.

F8rlodiCal I Priroda hh/4, 106 - 107 , Apr 1955
Abstract I Scientists find that in the repon around Uirmnsk,
besides the
impedimnt of low terperature to the growing of plants , the soil
is of poor quality. Experiments 6ere performed which showed that
by changine the color or the soil from light gray to black the
terperature of tbe air and of thB soil itself to considerable depth
vas raised by several degrees and the grovth of vegetation in these
formxerly bleak regions iiTproved. ;-.IayB were also found for
