The matr'Lx for the transformation of the Stokes parameters is obtained for polarized luminescence of crystals (dipole-dipole radiation). The intensity and the degree of polarization of the luminescence of cubic crystals is presented for cases most frequently encounteredl in expbrimental practice. The Fresnel reflection and the migration of energy of excitation during investigation of spectroscopic properties of the luminescence of the crystals are taken into account. TITLE: On the Problem of the Hydraulic -engineering Design of Dam Rein- forcements on Peat Foundations (K voprosu o Sidrotekhnicheskom raschete flyutbetov na torfyanykh osnovaniyakh) PERIODICAL: Tr. In-ta melior. vad. i bolot. kh-va AN BSSR, 1955, Vol 6, pp 266-280 ABSTRACT: Experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions (trough 250 by 30 by 55 cm) on the breaking down of a peat foundat:on in the tail- water basin of a model of a hydratWX installation (a single sheet pile 10 cm deep) under the action of seepage pressure. Tests were per- formed on seven structurally undisturbed monolithic peat specirnens of 20-450/o stage of decomposition and the volumetric weight (in its natural deposit) of -y = 0.4 - 1.01 g/cm3. The breaking down took place under moderate gradients of seepage flow (7.4 - 15.4) in the form of horizontal and 45-degree fissures beginning at the base of the sheet pile which were instrumental in making the soil bulge and in creating Card 1/3 a sharp increase in the seepage flow, Measurements of the turbidity. SOV/124-57-5-5813 On the Problem of the Hydraulic -engineering Design of Dam Reinforcements (cont.) of the water in the tail-water baain showed the negligible role of the washing away of the fines. It is deduced on the basis of the experiments that peat, when used in the foundation of hydraulic structures, resists the erosion of the hydrodynamic pressure not by its weight (since -y - 1) but by the forces of cohesion between the vegetable residue. A system is proposed for calculating the stability of the soil foundation layer in a tail-water b%sin the height of which is equal to the depth of the sheet pile s and the length of whi zh is such as would be from the sheet pile itself to that se. ".on where the hydrodyna-nic pressure is less than the tensile stress of the peat. The hydrodynamic pressure was determined as s -y f V dy 0 y where V y is the vertical component of the rate of seepage for a single sheet pile and an infinitely deep impervious layer and y is the volumetric weight of the water. By approximation, the rate of seepage V y was assumed to be that along the stream- line. The allowable tensile-stress value determined by special tests an specimens of peat was subtracted from the calculated pressure distribution and the remaining excess ressure was considered to be the load on a console beam (the soil layer) Card 273 SOV/124-57-5-5813 On the Problem of the Hydraulic-en8ineering Design of Dam Reinforcements (cont.) which was assumed to be working in bendirig. The comparison of the stresses cal- culated in this way (from 23 to 63 g/cm2) showed satisfactory agreement with the results of the rupture tests. It is to be noted that these values cannot be equated owing to the normally strongly pronounced anisotropy of the peat, since in a slab of peat subjected to bending the tensile stresses develop in a direction perpendic- ular to that under which the rupture tests were performed. The methodology recommended here does not take into consideration the weight of the peat proper (under full-scale conditions it may well play a considerable role) and the forces of cohesion (resistance to shear). The calculation scheme is characterized by its tentative nature. Bibliography: 6 references. S. F. Averlyanov Card 3/3 ADZUBUNI A.M. Selection of components for alfalfa-grass mixtures. Izv.AN Arm.
