Title : The Clinical Picture of Silicosis and Silicotuberculosis
in Workers Employed in Porcelain Factories
Orig Pub: Tr. Leningr. san.-gigien. med. in-ta, 1955, Vol 21,
20-26
Abstract: The medical examination of 360 workers in the porcelain
industry between the ages of 30-50 and over with
lengths of service varying from 5-10 years and over re-
vealed cases of hypertrophic and atrophic rbinitis, rhino-
pharyngitis, chronic catarrhal and purulent otitis, ton-
sillitis, and pharyngolaryngitis as well as sclerotic
processes which cause changes in the mucous membrane of
the upper respiratory tract and bring about its progres-
sive atrophy. A small thickening of the septum of the
heart was also observed together with dystrophic changes

Abstract: in the myocardium. Electrocardiographic investigations
have shown that the age and past Inedical history of the
patient are reflected in the electrocardiogram. X-ray
and laboratory investigations showed chronic cases of
hyperacidic gastritis. In cases of neglected silicosis
the patients were observed to suffer from sclerosis and
and atrophic changes in the intestinal tract; changes
in the overall immunobiological activity of the organism
were also observed.

Title Adaptometric Studies of Workers Employed in the Por-
celain Industry
Orig Pub: T7. Leningr. san.-gigien. med. in-ta, 1955, Vol 21, 81-86
Abstract: A Nagel adaptometer was used to measure the dark adapta-
tion of the eyes of workers employed in the procelain
industry. A number of paradoxical facts were observed:
in patients who were in the initial stages of silicosis
the dark adaptation Is lowered, while in patients suf-
fering from silicotuberculosis the dark adaptation is
considerably increased notwithstanding the more advanced
stage of the disease. The former is explained by the
Influence of additional productionfactors (convective
heat); the second may be ascribed to the heightened ex-
citability of the central nervous system in tubercular
caseo,

Title Electrocardiographic Studies on Workers Employed in the
Porcelain Industry
Orig Pub: Tr. Leningr. san.-gigien. med. in-ta, 1955, Vol 21, 87-92
Abstract: Electrocardiographic studies have been made of 82 workers
in a porcelain factory; the sample included workers of
different occupational backgrounds, age, and length of
service. In the above investigations greatest interest
attaches to the frequency of deviations from the norm in
cases suffering from silicosis, silicotuberculosis, and
tuberculosilicosis; these deviations are particularly
markedly expressed In a lengthening of the PQ wave and
in a shift of the electric axis of the heart. In the
majorit of cases a reduction in the heartbeat was ob-
served ~in 29 cases the heartbeat less than 60, and in

Abstract: 12 cases, less than 65); this observation raises the
possibility of the existence of damages to the conduction
system of the heart which cannot be cokpletely explained
on the basis of organic lesions. The hypothesis Is pre-
sented that changes in the heart muscle can be explained
not only on the ba.-is of hypoxemia and disturbances in
pulmonary circulation which accompany sillcosis but also
by reflexor effects in the respiratory tract and in the
lungs. The dystrophic process in the myocardium. may
serve as the irritating cause, producting reflexor
changes in the rhythm of heart activity.

ABSTRAM Magnetic of--spectrometers permit to compare the energies of the
investigated O~ -particles with the erergy of those CK, -particles
which are emitted by standards. Nevertheless the~ata obtained by
different authors for one and the same groups of OC.,-particles
sometimes differ widely, especially when work is done with dif-
ferent standards. Therefore the authors performed a new measure-
ment of the energy of the ol- -particles of Po21O. Further the
magnetic a(,-spectrometer is described, as well as the method
of operation. The measurement results of the energy of p0210
are shown in table 1. The results of the investigation are re-
presented by figure 1. Table 2 gives the measurement results of
the energy of the OL-particles of Em220 and figure 2 gives the
results of the investigation of Em220. The obtained values lead
Card 1/2 to the conclusion that the energy of the OC-particles of Em220
. The Energy of the OL -Particles of Po 210 48-7-2/21
and probnbly also of other daughter 0-1-emittere perhaps lie some-
what higher than their table values. For the energy of the
01- -particles of Po21O the authors suggest the value 5297,8
1,5 keV. There are 2 figures, 2 tables and 4 references, 2 of
which are Slavic.

proton synchrotron
PERIODICAL: Pribory i tekhnika eksperimenta, no.4, 1962, 223-229
TEXT: Permalloy probes modulated at 10 kcs were used to measure
the position of the neutral plane of the magneti c field, It was
found that the distortion of the neutral plane in the residual
field was determined mainly by the neutral pole. This distortion
decreased as the excitation of the C-blocks was increased.
Due to hysteresis effects, the measurements had to be carried out
under operating conditions. A description of the probe and its
associated circuits is given. The measurem!nts show that 67 of
the maghets have a deviation of the neutral plane in the range
+ 0.5 mmi 16 magnets have 0.5 to 0.6 mm, 3 magnets 0.6 to 0-7 mm

TITLE: Possibility of using a titanim, anode in a galvanic cell. 1. Corrosion of
titanium in acid olectrolytes
SOURCE: 1VUZ. I(himiya. i k1iimicheskaya tokhnologiyap v. 8,, no., 5# 1965p 804407
MIPIC TAGS: titaniumt corrosion rosistancep eloctrolysiaj, porchlorio acid, hydro-
fluoric acid, oxide formation
ABSTRACT: The corrosion resistance of Ti was datermincd by weighing 10 x 10 x 0-5 MM
sanplo3 of titanium BT-1 sheets surponded in a polyethylene vessel and exposed to the
ef.Lect of 30 ml acid solution (HC104'j, HF, and their mixturc3) at 25C. The Ti had a
high corrosion resistance in H010 4; no decrease in weight and no visible changes were
obsorvod in samplos oxposed for 6 months to H010 having concentrations of 100-800 9/A
although the st'ationary potential of Ti increased with increased concentration of
HG104 from 0.160 to 0.309 v.,7he addition of HF to the HC104 solution sharply do-
creased the corrosion resistance of Ti. up to a certain maxiin-um. The corrosion of Ti

in a pure HF solution increased proportionally with an increase in the concentration
of HF. The presence of HF in the HC10 4 Golut'On in aU cases caused the activation of
the Ti surface probably because of the destruction of the oxide film by fluoride ions,
The activation effect of RF decrPased at a larGer rate at a higher concentration or
HC104 in solution. An increase of the HC104 concentration from 100 to 800 g/1 in-
creased its activity from 0o932 to 1138, The concentration of fluoride ions, therefor,
docroased with increased concentration of H0101. This caused a rapid accumulation of
corrosion products on the surface of TI. The ditssolving of Ti in HC10 , containing
HF, occurred under mixed anode-cathode control and the process was dXlerated equaA,
on the anode and the cathode, Tho increase in concentration of HC10 4 promoted (I
an increase in thickness of-the oxide film which was indicated by changes in the
values of the stationary potentials and (2~ an increase in activity of H ions facili.
tating depolarization of H and causing the formation of maximums on the corrosion
rate ciz-ve. The displacement of the maximum to the left side of the curve, ioee, to
the side of lower doncatrantions, during enrichment in HF of the,.solution., was relate(
to a stronger effect of corrosion agents resulting in rapid passivation of the anodo

ABSTRACT: This article is the first of a series of publications on
polymers. The author first gives a survey of the development
of the physical chemistry of plastics and in this connection
he mentions a converoation which was held in 1931 with the
director of the Leningradskiy Jnstitut plastioheskikh mass
(Leningrad Institute of Plastics), Professor G. S. Popov.
He further explains ouch conceptions as monomers~ polymers,
and polymerization5 and describ *ea the entire present stage
of chemical synthesis and structural research. Various points
of view are defended in this fields Some SC4entists, among
them Academician 11~ N. Semerov., are cf the opinion that
chemistry has opened up unlimited possibilities for the
production of any polymeric molecules with given properties.
Others again, such as A~ N~ NesmeyA~

and point out existing d`fficulties arising in the production
of high-molecular compounds of a certain structure. Neverthe-
less, the two opinions are not strictly opposed to each other.

Zavodskaya laboratoriya, 1960, Vol. 206, No. 7, pp. 839-842
TEXT: Th authors describe an instrument for measuring the potential of
acidproofhantalumt'niobium alloys in sulfuric acid at temperatures up to
2500C. A calomel element is used as reference electrode. The instrument
(Fig. 1) is made of heat-resistant "Pyrex" glass, and is,in principle,
a cylinder cooled on top, in which the alloy is dipped as electrode into
sulfuric acid. The polarizing current is supplied via a Pt electrode.
The present experiments were carried out with a suitable arrangement
(Fig. 2) containing the polarization scheme and a measuring scheme. The
authors investigated alloys with 70.8% of Ta + 29.2% of Nb, as well as
21.6% of Ta + 78-4% of Nb. Potential measurements of the former alloy
at different temperatures have shown (Fig. 3) that at 1000C the potential
became gradually more positive due to the consolidation of the

TEXT: The authors studied the behavior of Ta, Nb and their alloys, contain-
ing-21.6; 34 60; 49.4; 67.3 at. % Ta, in H2SO4 at high temperatures In 90%
H2SO4, at 250 C, during the transition from an alloy containing 34.0 at. % Ta to
an alloy containing 49.4 at. % Ta, an over 30-fold decrease of the corrcision rate
was observed (from-15,1'to 0.5 B/m2.hour) and also an abrupt change of the poten-
tia!7'toward the- positive side (from 0,25-t0 0.77 v, i.e. mom than by 0 .5 V) -
The abrupt changes in the anti-corrosion properties of the alloy oorrespond.to the
first threshold of stability in the Ta and Nb correlation, equal to 4/8 atomic
fraction. Extended tests (120 hours) of Ta-Nb alloys under experimental condi-
tions, do not-shift the threshold of stability towards the rate of other Ta-Nb

correlations in the alloy. In 10% H2S04 at boiling temperature of the solution
(1020C), the internal stresses (cold hardness) shift the electrode potential of
the alloys to the negative side, by 0.05 v on the average, but both cold hardness
and stress applied do not reduce the corrosion resistance nor cause corrosion
cracking of the alloys. Tests with the Ta-Nb alloy containing 96.2 at.% Ta in
various V04 solutions at 2500C, have shown that 70% H2804 is the most aggressive
medium as compared with-its solutions of other concentrations. There are 11

ABSTRACT: Characteristics of semiconductor voltage stabiliZeTSwith a
parallel -connected reactive -ballast impedancic are considered. The circuits are
suitable for output voltages under 40-50 v ani slightly fluctuating load currents.
Formulas for the overall efficiency of a stab,.lized rectifier with a resistance, an
inductance, or a capacitance ar, the ballast element are developed. The voltage
stabilization is possible without anv ballast element. using 'the internal impedance
of the rect4fier 4ristead. A react,~ve ballast element enhances the overall
