The hardness was measured with a Brinnel J>ress usifig the impact method, the static method, a sphere, and a cone at imrious loading durations and using also the water-loading method. At low temperatures and high'speeds of deformation one abserves in Plb-Bi and Pb-Sn alloys a gradual Increase in hardness with increasing concentration of the solid solution. When the hardness is determined at an increased temperature and at slow defopmtion rates, the hardness has a maximum within the region where the sol: Zt1s`t_s- Cd-Hg alloys exhibit under all tes 't conditions a reduc- tion in hardness with increasing mercury concentration. TITLE: Time Hardness as a Method of Physicochemical Analysis PERIODICAL: Zhurnal fizicheskoy khimi-*, 1959, Vol 33, Nr 10, pp 2222 - 2229 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The authors made experiments on the variation in hardness of various alloys in dependence on the variation in ccmposition at various temperatures and various durations of strain. Bismuth- cadmium alloy5 (2-7p 180'79 44.6p 62.2, 90.9 At.~ B!,), bismuth- antimony alloys (6, 159 25P 50P 75 It% Bi)q bismuth-lead alloys (5, 10, 20, 30o 33-3p 56-3, 70, 95 At% Bi), the solid solution of bismuth in 'Lead (6.25v 12-5, 15 and 17.5 At~ Bi), aluminum- zinc alloys, cadmium-mercury all oys (6.2v 1205~ 18 7 % Rg) and lead-mercury alloys (5.2,, 10.3, ; 12.9, 15-4, 20-5, 5060 31 % Hg) were used for this purpose. The alloys were subjected to thermal treatment and loaded (10, 34-4v 36w 39p and 69*4 1:9) for Tarious times (59 30, 150, 720 and 1440 min). The influence of oxygen on the direct cost of produztion was examined 'by reference to workshop calculations, and it was found that. a), ekpsnsive soft iron could be replaoed in the oharge by cheaper components~ for the lKil8NS)T and 18M4VA steels by alloy scraps (up to 73 % and 80 %, respec~tively), while for structural and tool steels by carbon-containing low-phosphorus scraps, b) by using oxygen in the furnace, electric power ,onsumption c--;Ln be reduced consider- ably, because the melting period isEhorter and the cut-re-n", iQ s~wlt_%hed off while oxygen is blown through the bath. For instance, the saving effected by using oxygen in melting IKhl8N9T steel amounts to 644.97 rubles/ton, whereas thrs ad- ditional cost of using oxygen is no more than C21.73 rubles/ton. A draviback of the process is that the amount of cinder, the total ~-,inder amount of the metal 1.5-1.8 times, that of cYuromium 1.6 of ir-On and zilicon 2.4 times.
