In this paper the practically interesting problem of outflow through a burst in a pipe- line is considered. The here presented theory can be applied for determining the location of the burst. If there is a burst in the pipelinel the pressure therein will decrease and a pressure difference dp will bring about, during the time dt, a decrease in the throughput capacity whereby the liquid at the section x (up to the point of burst) of the pipeline will begin to move with a speed wl at the flow rate ql, see sketch Fig.l. For verifying the validity of this formula the authors carried out experiments on a steel pipeline 74/62 mm. dia., 1000 M long; at a distance of x = 400 m a hole was drilled which was fitted with a needle valve of 5.5 mm dia. After filling the pipeline with water and eliminating the air spaces, the pressure was raised up to P 16 atm. Following that, the needle valve was op8ned with a maximum possible speed and the pressure drop was measured by means of a pressure gauge, measuring simultaneously the time with a second watch. The results of two experiments and also calculated results are given and it can be seen Card 2/3 that in both cases the values determined by means of the SOV/24-58-8-26/37 On the Theory of Flow from a Pipe in the Case of Bursting as a Result of Pressure above quoted formula are in agreement with those determined by experiment. The here expounded theoretical considera- tions can be applic-d for determining the location of bursts in pipeline,; by raising the pressure in the pipeline. This method is ap:?licable solely if there is only one burst in the pirpeline. To be able to do this satisfac- torily it is nricessary to build an inertia-free instrvment which will be able to record the pressure drop during fractions of a second, i.e. 0.001 and even 0.0001-see. A now hypothesis and a univariate theo17 of the vortex effect (1.4nij 6f~~Gc -t)1 are presented. To explain the nature of the vortex effect, the author pro-coeds from the fact that the static temperature gradient along the vortex section is the re 'sult of the action of centrifugal forces. With suppression of the circumferential velocities of the rotating ga ., s current the drag temperature will increase from the vortex axis to the periphery since the circumferential velocity increases from the axis to the periphery according to the law of rigid body rotation. According to the proposed hypothesis, the vortex effect is a consequence of the gas temperature redistribution along the tube section at the inlet of the vortex cavity because of the inertial centrifugal forces and the linear layt of circumferential velocity distribu- tion along the tube radius. The steady-state gas/motion in the vortex cavity is considered. The Navier-Stokes equations are used as the initial relations. The axial velocities (which, as a rulet are 10--20 times less than the circumferential), the -Card 1/2 ACC NRi AR6014920 frictional forces on the rigid wallop the gravitational forceop and the pressure gradient along the tube length are not taken into account. It is assum3d that the change in density (static pressures and temperatures) alplig the vortex radius follows the Poisson law '0~-A'11. . Only the case of near-sonic and sonic gas discharge from the .P jet is considered. The distribution laws for the static temperature and pressure and the drag temperature along the vortex radius are found. 'It is shown that the increase in drag temperature at any point along the vortex radius because of the action of centrifugal forces equals the magnitude of the increase,of this temperature because of the suppression of the circumferential velocity.of rotation of gas particles. Expressions for the average values of drag temperature of hot and cold currents are obtained. The relation for vortex cavities of optimal dimendions i- Yp': is found according to which the ratio of diaphragm hole diameter to tube diameter equals the square root of the fraction by weight of the cold gas current (by a vortex cavity of optimal dimensions is implied a cavity in which the velocity, pressure, and tempera- .;ure fields are undisturbed). A comparison is made of the calculated results with the experimental results of Khilsh, Ellser and Ehokh, and Khartnett and Ekkert. Por all jets, with the exception of peripheral, the difference between the calculated data and the experimental does not exceed 2-30/t. Appreciable disagreement between the indicated data is observed only for the peripheral regions where frictional forces appear to a significant degree; this was not taken into account in -the proposed procedure. Jul/Aug 1954 Abstract : This article deals vith an instrument used in the study of effects of low atmospheric pressure on the organism. This is a simply constructed instrument containing no mercury and is useful in measuring rare-field atmosphere. The altimeter consists of a small test tube inverted and filled with water held in by an elongated cork stopper. The extension of the cork stopper is connected with a rubber tube 8-10 cm in length. A glass tube, 10-12 cm iin length and 3-5 mm in diameter, is inserted into the open end of the rubber tube. Air volume in the test tube in- creases when atmospheric pressure falls.
