It was established that insects, jarticularly beetle
larvae, constitute the largest part of soil -*nverte-

ABSTRACT: Results (R) are presented of a six-month experiment in the
operation of the open-hearth department of the Makeyevka 'j4
Wi:)rks toward development of top pouring of killed structural
carbon steel into 6.2-t ingot (1) molds directly from 185-t
Ladles. The n-Aost common defects in top-poured I are trans-
v4irse cracks. found on examining the I as they are charged
into soaking pits. Billets resulting from the rr.Hing of such I
in blooming mills had a large number of cracks and fissures.

bottom pouring showed that the total losses of metal in the
open-hearth department (scrap, short-run castings. and re-

pouring. 1he total rejects of billets due to metal defects were 8.717o with top
pourinR, ard 0.63trc. wit), bottom pouring. Blooming-mill cost coefficients due
to defect.4 were, respectively, 1.48 and 1.31. Although labor costs in pre-
paring trains oi mold cars for top pouring are only one-fifth of those for bot-
torn pouring, top stopped by this plant because of the high losses
, pouring was
of metal i.n the open-hearth department and in the first conversion, and also
due to lack of space for corrective measures. In the subsequent development
of bottom-pouring techniques for killed steel. the top cropping of ingots for
ordinary gradeti (if strel was reduced to 14.0% and that of quality steels to
1-3.5% owing to conversion from 6.2-t I with 4.37% taper to 7-t I with 2.8016
taper. No surface defects occur in bottom pouring of killed steel at a rate of
r--se of O.Z5-0.40 iri/min. The optimum rate of rise of bottom pouring of rim-
med steel is between 0.25 and 0.35 m1min. It is observed that the pouring of
overheated heats increases the rise of an ingot and the c rop-end loss result-
ing therefrom. Strict regulation of the temperature of the steel before tap-
ping is the most. important means of reducing this type of loss. It is particu-
larly noted that selection of the method of pouring should take into considera-
tion the conditions at the given plant (the assortment of steels made, the
availability of s-pace for corrective adjustment, and so forth).
