TEXT: For measuring AV/V at T 180K), a highly accurate apparatus was
designed whose sensitive part is a coil of bimetal strip 55 cm1o.rig. One
end of this is stationary, and the other can turn when the volume of one
metal changes with respect to the other, the tors-ion correspondir4,, to the
quantity to be measured. In this case the coil consisted of niobium coated
with Nb Sn (0-05 mm). The Jump of the expansion coefficient of Nb 3Sn at
1-5-10-~[+ 10~) deg-1 was apparently as large as that of tin and lead. Th~:
theoretical valueldetermined thermodynamically, would appear to bo higher
by three powers of ten than that measured. This indicates that for Nb 3 Sh.

and similar superconductors the magnetic field has great depth of penetra-
tion. The coefficients of expansion and compression of Nb 3Sn and Nb also
were measured in the temperature range 3000 to 20K. The expansion
coefficient of Nb3Sn was found to be only slightly larger than that of Nb,
e.g. by 3-10- 6at 3000K and by 2-10- 7 at 2-40K, i.6., the thermal and
elastic properties of Nb 3Sn and Nb are very similar.~ There is 1 figure.

TM: An investigation was made of the effect of I, Br, Cl adjuixtures on
the optical properties of thin Se layers. Se layers 3 - 5 /t thick with a deter-
mined percent of admixture composition were obtained by evaporation of' correspond-
ing mixtures in vacuo. The absorption, transmission and reflection ispectra-were
obtained. From the ponition of the edge of the proper absorption for amorphous
and crystalline selenium the width of the forbidden zone (1.94 and 1.83 eV, res-
pectively) was calculated. It has been shown that the.presence of I.. Br 'and C1
admixtures (up to 15%) has almost no effect on the position of the lorg wave

This article. deals with the achievements of the Tadzhik Aca-
demy of Sciencesas stated by the Vice-President of the Academy,
G.A, Aliyev. In the field of astronomy, scientists P, Baba-
dzhanov, A. Bakharev and others, of the Stalinabad Observatory,
achieved good results in the study of comets and meteors, as
well as of the formation and evolution of meteoric streams.
Under the guf.dance of the Astronomical Council of the USSR
Academy of Sbiences they elaborated physical problems of the
upper layers of the atmosphere, applying meteor4Lc methods to
a large extent. The research work done in the J.ield of photo-
graphing metoors, allows to determine the density, temperature
and wind sys-,ems of the stratosphere. The undexatanding of
the influenco of sun radiation on comets will make it possible
to improve the correctness of prognoses on the ionditions of
the upper lajers of the earth's atmosphere. At, the same
time, Tadzhi'c astronomers, K. Saidov and others, are intensi-

fying their studies on variable stars, their forination and
movement. Tho scientists have obtained about 20,000 photo-
graphs of the celestial sphere, 3,000 variable stars were ex-
plored and 25 i~ew ones were discovered. In the near future,
scientists of the Observatory will begin the study of the
metagalaxy.
In the field of power engineering, research work on the
Fan-Yagnobskaj;acoal deposits has been successful:.y-completed
by scientists, Sh. Kabilov, I. and V. Nikitinsand others of
the Tadzhik Academy of Sciences.
The irrigation of arable land in the Tadzhik is another
important pro-Dlem to which the scientists of the Academy of
Scienceshave devoted much time and effort. The -axperiments
undertaken by the Tadzhik Academy of Science3cori.-erning the
cross breeding of a fat Middle-Asian sheep with a Turkmeni-
stan-English breed was accomplished. This new variety will
give not only good meat but a high quality wool as well.
Tests in this field are being carried on and wi.1.1 be complet-
ed by 1960.

ABSTRACT: The landscapes, of Azerbaydzhan are alpine meadows as well as
subtror*~cal IDWIands. Two thirdn of the total e.rea is under
cultivation. Soil especially subject to erosion is situated
in the Nakhichavan ASSR, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autoncmous
District, etc. The production of cereals on these soils is
3- 4 centners per ha. In the irrigated lowlands, where 80-1
of the agrioultural production is concentrated, many soils
are salted. Over the lasl.~10 years, 12,000 ha ware needed
for urban devolopment and 50,000 ha were flooded by water re-
servoiro. On the Apsheron Peninsula the water bi!ought up by
oil drilling operations (which contains much salt) is poured
over fertile agricultural laad, ruining the land.. Pastures
are not rationally used. The growth of new and iraluable grass
is not cared for by sowing and fortilizine. The number of
cattle could lie increased 1.5 - 2 times on the sitme area by
applyinj; rational methods. Many pastures are covered by weeds
which reduces their productivity. Erosion in sone mountain

period. Of the woods in Azerbaydzhan, 90% are :.n the mountains
where their soil protective influence is especially great.
During the last 50 years the forest land of tho republic has
decreased by 1109000 ha. In the Kingechaur wator reservoir
20,000 ha have been recently flooled. Over the last 25 years,
only 25,000 ha of new woods have been planted. The forests
on the river bank of the Kura, which need the inundation of
the river every year, are threatened by drought since tho
erection of the Mingechaur water reservoir. It is recommended
that tree3 and plant's be protected by parks.
