ABSTRACT: This is L science-fiction story in the form of a report
which dealswith thediscovery of a petroleum lake on the sea bottom.
In this connection the problem of water pressure and the so-cal-

ABSTRACT: Recently several investil-
,ations have been carried out
dealing with the corrooion proportios of titanium, for
titanium has properties well suited for coristruction material.
The present paper deals with the effect of the Cl_-, Br_-
and J - ions upon the behavior of Ti in sulfuric acid so-
lutions. Cold-rolled titanium tin VT-1D (0.111~'., Fe,

was investigated. The experiments were carried out in the

Corrosion of Titanium. I. Effect of the HaloGen Ions Upon the Corrosion
and Electrochemical Behavior of Titanium in Sulfuric Acid
determined according to the loss in weight and the halogen
ions were added in form of their Ha-aalts. The experimen-
tal results obtainad confirm the assumption that the corrosion
behavior of Ti is determined by a coating of an oxide film
on the metal. Thus, it is possible to explain observations
as to a Ti-activation in diluted sulfuric acid in the pre-
sence cf oxyGen and a considerable potential shift towards
more negative values in CDYUlCetion %Ath a purification of
the titanium surface. The addition of J--ions produced in
several cases an increased corrosion resistance of titanium
which is due to a paosivation by the formation of a complex
ion J3. C1 - and Br_- ions have a double effect; in diluted
acid solutions where titanium is pausivated they cause an
activation; and in concentrated acid solutions with activated
titanium they cause a passivation. The nature of the effect
of Cl_- and Br_- ions depends on the state of the Ti-surface
and the formation of an adsorption- or phase protective film
