For that reason the Armenian Academy of Sciences conoentrates its resqaroh mainly on the natural deposits of the country. In the central area of the countryt*geologisto discovered deposits of the new,ore - nephalins eyenite, from which aluminum oxide is dorivo 9 along with a number of useful byproduots. Another field of research is tht utilization of marble, tuff and re- fraotory clay for building purposes. The Academy devotes much attention-to the development of radio-astronomy. Two powerful radiotelesoopes will shortly be installed in the now Astro- physical Obsenvatory of Byurakan, a village on the 'slope of the Cord 1/2 Aragats mountain. PERIODICALs Vestnik AN SSSR, 1957, Vol. 27, Nr 11, PP. 45 - 57 (USSR) ABSTRACTs During the last 40 years astrophysics took quite new lines. These changes were caused by the use of new telescopes, measur- ing apparatus based on electronics and the development of a new field of science- theoretical astrophysics. The author reports on a number of interesting results obtained by Soviet astrophy- sicists (concerning the problem of the origin and the evolution of the stars). The author emphasizes that this problem of the formation of individual stars and star clusters (skopleniye zvezd) must only in recent times be considered a coherent entire- ty. As regards the age of the stars a new line is taken in the USSR from the standpoint of theoretical mechanics. The prooesses of disintegration (disootsiataii) and the inverse processes- the recombination (rokoiabinataii) represont a starting-point of fur- ther research works. Conaerning the problem of the formation of double stars 2 contradiotory hypotheses exista the formation by "incorporation" (zakhvat) of a third one upon approximation (tro- iniye ablizheniye)or the formation of a double star by dissocia- Card 1/3 tion. SOV/ ~0-58-7-1/49 AUTHOR: Ambartsumyant Ve A., Member, Academy of Sciences, USSR TITLE: The Coming International Congress of Astronomers (Wavetrechu mezhdunarodnomu e"yezdu astronomov) PERIODICAL: Vestnik Akademii nauk SSSR, 1958, Nr 7, PP- 3 - 6 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The 10 th Congress (Plenary Meeting) of the International Association of Astronomers which is held every 3 years in various countries, will take place in Moscow in August of this year. This association was founded in 1920 for the purpose of coordinating the work of the astronomers of all observatories and of the ostronomical iiistitutes of the world in order to avoid UlLnecessary work. Much important scientific work could be carried out only owing to the participation of a large number of countries. As a result of this collaboration it is possible to compare and to con- trol the results obtained by observation. The work of'this association is carried out by permanent committees and sub- committeeal the nunber of these permanent committees is 38o Card 1/3 Permanent international observation of the sun is mRintained. The Coming International Congress of Astronomers SOV/ 30-58-7-1/49 International discussion of scientific problems is -Q ne- cesBary that the association feels obliged to organize international symposia during intervale.between congresses, A special symposion on radicastranomy will be held this year in Paris, before the loth Congress. Two great symposia will be hold in connection with the Moscow Congrems. The participation of Soviet astronomers in the work of the association was intensified after the second world war, Soviet scientists are members of almost all committees of the association. B. V. Kurakin was appointed one of the vioe-presidents of the association. Soviet astronomers are carrying out many investigations according to the inter- national program. The calculation -of the trajectory elements and of the ephemerids of small plar~e~ is carried out by the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy of the Academy (Institut teoreticheskoy astronomii Akademii). Soviet astronomers suggested that a ca`t~gujp bp compiled showing the exact position of a great numbei oi wL-ak stars. This work Js planned b~7 Committee Nr 8, %hose President is M. S. Zverev. The a8tronomers are interested, above allp in the scientific results obtained by means of test flightz Card 2/3 of artificial aLtellites. The Astrophysical Observatory The Coming Internatiobal Congress of Astronomer3 SOV/ 3o-58-7-1/49 Krym carried out interesting investigations of the nature of solar explosiong. The Obeervatory of Leningrad University is investigating the transmission of energy. Foreign astro- nomers show great interest in Soviet observatorieso some of which were newly reconstructed after the war, while others were reconstructed and equipped with new instruments of Soviet origin (e.g.
