ABSTRACT: Allowing for the nonuniformity of the velocity distribution in
the effective cross section of a flow shows that the localized
loss caused by an abrupt divergence equals approximately half
the value obtained with the Borda forinuti.. The author con-
ducted measurements of ao in a pipe si!ction having a cross-
sectional area w (d= 100 mm) downstream of the partition and
an orifice area f; this niade it possible to plot the curve of the
variation cof cLo along the length of the -a~.pe. The experiments
revealed that immediately downstreant 3.:~ the partition, when
f/W= 0.1. CLO = Z4.5, and, when f / W = 0. 2, Qo= 12. At a
distance (5 - 6)d from the partition a0 d-rops back to its
