TITLE- A Simple Method of Calou'lating the Regime of Annealing by Taking
the Shape of the Product and the Properties of the Glass Into
Account (Prostoy metoa rascheta, rezhima otzhiga a uchetom formy
izdeliya i svoystv stekla)
PERIODICAL: Steklo i Keramika, 1958, Nr 6, pp. 11-16 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The authors say that at present there are no reliable methods of
calculating the annealing regime of glass productst wtdch may e.g.
be gathered from the book by V.A.Kuzyak, which contains many
mistakes. This article describes a new method of calculation, which
is based upon the latest theoretical and experimental research
work carried out by TsT411XS for the elaboration and introduction
of accelerated regimes of annealing as viell as of controlling and
modernizing continuous production annealing furnaces (1952-1955).
Calculation is suited for the selection of the annealing regime
for glass of any composition, without it being necessary to know
its chemical composition and its physical properties with the
Card 1/4 exception of resistance to heat and the zone limits of annealing.

Annealing by Taking the Shape of the Product
and th,~ P:^oper-ties of the Glass Into Account
i.) Detemination of initial data is carried out by a method which
is contained in GOST 732.8-55, as viorkea out by TsNILES and in the
atandards VN MS 937-52. In order to ascertain the zone limits of
amealing the polarimeter (fig. 1) is used. From the temperature
cur.pes shown (fig. 2) the zone limits my be ascertained. Stand-
ards VN MS 938-52 give a detailed description of this method,
which is based upon that used by S.G.Lioznyanskava and S.I.Iofe
(Ref 1). The average values of resistance to heat and of the zone
limits for the most-known types of industrial glass are mentioned
in table 1.
2.) The purpose of annealing and permissible limits (tolemnees).
Optical ana thexual glass is annealed in order to stabilize Its
structure; in the case of all other types of glass this is done
merely in order to reduce residual stress to an amount that exer-
cises pmetioally no influ-gnce on the strength of the glass any
longer.
3.) Selection of the basic parameters of the regime. The cycle of
annealing consists of the follovring 4 stages: Heating up to
Card V4 annealing temperature, critical interval, slow cooling down in

the zone of annealing, and complete cooling down. Fig. 3 shows a
scheme for the selection of the most important parameters of the
regime of annealing, which depend oft the permissible temperature
drop ST in the product. This value is expressed in table 2 as
part of the resistance to heat.
4.) The drop in temperature in the glans walls. A formula (3) is
given which makes it possible to convert the values given in
table 2.
5.) Taking account of the shape of products. The authors refer to
the work by V.L.Indenbom and B.A.Rezn:Lkov (Ref 1). When annealing
products of complicated shape the parasitic temperature drops in
the product itself must be taen into account, which are caused by
differences in the dimens'Aons of the glass. Fomulae (4) and (5)
are given for the calculation of these temperature drops.
6.) Approximative calculation of the ooeffioients of temperature
conductivity and heat transfer. The coefficient of temperature
conductivity can be assumed to amount to 0.25 aVminute. The

coefficient of the relative surface heat transfer depends on the
temperatur*) of the product and of the furnace. Furthermore, 2
formlae and an example are given for its calculation. Reference
in also mde to the work by N.I.Ananich. There are 3 figures,
2 tables, and 5 references, 5 of which are Soviet.

underlying the development of the anomalous double refraction
of tays. To clarify the substance of this phenombnon, the
authors of this paper carried out research work to establish the
temperature influenoe on this phenomenon, using a polarimsterp
the scheme of which is described in the paper by Indenbom and
Ananich (note 7), on the basis of the curves for the dependence
of the anomalous double refraction of rays on telaperature, the
authors endeavored to find an explanation of the causes for the
development of micro-stresses in the glass types, and to
characterize the structure of these glass types in connection
thetewith. They quote here the papers by V* V. Tarasov (Refel"q
and 9). Furthermore# 7 figures are given, showing the ourres

TEXT: The ocourreitce of positive and negative anomalous birefringenae
above the vitrification temperature when SiO 2'- B203 -- Na 20 glass rods
are cooled and stretched simultaneously has already been reported
("Ste,klo", Informatsionnyy byulleten' Institute stekla', 1956, no. 2;-
Steklo I keramika, 1959, no. 9) *In the present paper this effect was
studied in glass rode containin; 70% S102 , 23% B20Y and 7% Na 20, a
composition which tends to demix. Glasses with a similar composition
showed1he same behavior. Accordin to the conditions of stretching
(temperstureq load, rate of coolingl, both negative and positive
'birellr rgence was observed in similar compositions. Maximum negative

birefringence occurred when the glasses were heated to 700 OC, and the
negative birefringence inareased further when they were cooled. Some,
samples iihowed no birefringence until they were heated, whereupon negative
bireftingence was observed and this was increased by subsequent cooling.
Hence it was concluded that in a cold state, two equal but opposite
birefxing, ences arise. As sodium borosilicate glasses which tend to demix
are assuried to consist of silica skeletons penetrating each other and of
the lower-melting sodium - boron component, the latter was leached out and
replaced by liquids in the porous glass. When the liquid had the same
refractive index as the sodium - boron component (n D - 1.504)p birefringence
did nat ccour. Only negative form birefringence, caused by stretching of
the silica skeleton, was observed when the liquid and the sodium - boron
comporient had different values of nD* Positive birefringence., which has
also been observed in boric anhydrides, is due to an orientation of the
struclural elements of the sodium - boron component. Anomalous bir&ingence
in mic!roheterogeneoue glasses is caused by the orientation effect of the
component with the lover vitrification temperature and by form birefringenoe.
The birefringence of glasses with a distinct chain structure depends only
on the orientation of the structural elements. There are 9 figureso

ABSTRACT: Thc thermal expansion of the glasses DVl, 28.:9, I'lonex", an experimental
three-comp5ner,t glass (7% Na20, 23% B203, 70% SiQ2), and vitreous boric anhydride
was studied. The samples had different structural birefringences. Changes in the
character )f the curve representing the thermal expansion of glasses having struc-
tural birefrirgence indicated that during heating, the structural elements (chains,
aggregates) stretched in a certain direction contract and become disoriented, causing
an irrever-sible contraction of the sample. A confirmation of the tendency of
vitreous bt)ric anhydride to become oriented is given by the difference observed in
the photoeLastic constants of isotropic and birefringent samples. Another such
confirmation ],a provided by electron-microscopic data. In the authors' vtow, the
phenomenon of orientation of the structural elements in inorganic glasses and

organic polymers is similar in character; for this reason, the study of orientation
is of major importance for the development and refinement of concepts of the poly-
meric structure of inorganic glasses. Tho presence of birefringence in the glasses
studied is another argument in favor of the concept that sodium borosilicate and
other glasues have a microheterogeneous structure. Grig. art. has: 2 figures,

Title: Causes of the Occurrence of Specks and Bubbles in Glass Strip
Original
Publicatf.on: Steklo i keramika, 1956, No 7, 27-28
Abstract% On vitrification (V) of upper channel structure, when V bodies flow-
ing down come in contact with the main body of glass, bubbles are
formed in the latter. On investigation of the cause of formation of
bubbles and specks in a glass strip, it was found that near the oper-
ating machine, in the low temperature zone, at a considerable vis-
cosity of the glass, no interaction takes place between vitrification
products and glass body. Hereat is possible only an erosion process
which results in the formation of waviness. Over areas more remote
from the glass being drawn, the acting erosion forces are decreased,

Abstract [English summary modified]: Authors, unpublished data as well
as Bulgarian, other Soviet, Czech, Japanese uncited publications are
reviewed in support of authors, contention that Infectious hepatitis
can be caused by several different viruses each having their own
specific properties and only vaguely related, as to ECHO, Coxsackie
and other entero- aTad adenoviruses, canine hepatitis virus. Human
cells (renal, endothelial vascular, Intestinal, Detroit-6) are best
inedia. In some instances, disease undistinguishable from infectious
hepatitis appears to have been produced by known viruses.
