TITLEs The burning zone in large cupolas PERIODICAL: Liteynoye proizvodstvo, no. 10, 1960, 8 - 9 UM The burning zone in cupolas is characterized by the chemical compositLon of the gas phase and by the temperature and area in which the burning prooess takes place. The main constituents of the gas phase are C02, CO, 02, and N2- ne authors point out that although the :burning zone of small extent [Ref. 1: Beldon --Stahl und Eiaen"p no. 9, 1914; Ref. 2t Dipschlage, E. The tuyeze zone was investigated on cupolas of the Sinarskiy trubnyy zavod (Sinarsk Pipe Plant) having the following parameters: inner diameter - Card 1/4 S/12 6010001010100610161XX The burn:Lng zone in large cupolas A033YIL133 1,600 mm,; jaoket - 2080 mm; useful height - 5,850 mm, height of hearth 1,000 mmi three rows of eight tuyerea each at a distance ofm;OO mm; tu- yere area of the lower row - 0 0400, of the other rows 0.150 each. The cupola hits an output of 25 tons/hour, coke consumption is 7.5 - 8.0%. Ke- merovo coke of 50 - 0'0_mm IUME size is used. The tapping temperature of them3ig :iron is 11295 11300 0 on the average. The air consumption is 80 /m2,/hourt the blast pressure 950 - 1,000 mm water column. To deter- mine the composition and temperature of the gas in different points of the burning :=e over the height and cross section of the cupola, a special water-cooled gas-oollecting pipe of 26 mm outer diameter was used. A short descript:Lon of the pipe is given and the authors enumerate the technical difficul-Aes of obtaining the appropriate gas samples. The gas-colleoting pipe was put in through the tuyere up to the cupola axis, while the gas was sempled and the temperature measured - with the aid of a thermocouple placed in the p:;pe - through every 100 mm. Over the height of tYs bed charge the burning !,,one was investigated at the level of the first and the third tu- yere row,, Fig- 3 shows the change in the composition and temperature of the gas on the level of the first tuyere row, Fig. 4 the identical results of the third row, In the latter case the oxygen oontent in the gas becomes Card 2/4 CHEIUIOBROVKIII, V.P.; DOBRYDENI) A.A.; KAYBICHEV, A.V. SOV/6-59-6-9/22 TE!LE: Installation of Fixed Points by the Method of Tha,.ring the Ground by Vapor (Zakladka -reperov metrdom Dro'.aivaniya grunts, parom) PERIODICA,L: Geodeziya i kartografiya, 1959, Hr 6, Pp 37-40 (USSR) ABSTRACT: Party Nr 107 of the Yakutskoye aerogaod6zicheskoye predpriyatiye (Yakutsk Aerogeodetic Service) has been using since 1957 the procedure suggested by I. F. Shevaldin for the installation of fixed points. In this procodure, the ground is thawed up by vapor. Shevaldin made for this purpose a b-i!Fr of sheet metal 3 mm thick with a diameter of 50 cm and a height Of 50 cm. The L. %.oiler weighed 50-60 kg and had in its middle a heating tube of 100 mm diameter to which a smoke flue was at-tachqd. It had 2 valves and a manometer. The working method consists of the preparations# the thawing of the ground by vapo--?, the digging of the pitq the external shaping of the fixed point, and the final work. The method of operation is described in detail. The boring is done with a drill at a vapor pressure of 3 atmos- Gard 1/2 pheres excess pressure. Two drills 3 m and 2 m long are used Installation of Pixed Points by the Method of SOV/6-519-6-9/22 Thawing the Ground by Vapor which are driven in at an interval of 1I m. The vapor thaws the ground around the drill's and the latter are dri7en In more and more. The thawed ground is removed by shovels. The drills remain 4-6 hours In the earth. Then they are removed and a pit is dug out. The fixed point is then instal-'ed in it. In a number of oasest fixed points are installed with mooringacrews in loamy$ muddy and sandy terrain. Su--h anchor is made of a 30 am iron disk which is out up radially, tho en1s beifig bent alternately upward and downward. This disk is then welded to the lower end. of the tube fixed Tic-In".. No pit. 4-s dug for such fixed point, but the tube fixed point Is screwed into the thawed ground. Particular pipe wrenches are used for screwing in. The latter takes 15-20 minutes. In summer 1958, the fixed points installed in 1957 were controlled. 5 of them were uncovered. The installation prcved to be excellent, the fixed points were stable. The editors add that the fixed points ihstalled by IV-he method described must no. be leveled before the ground has frozen again. There are 3 tables. In pover stations, the practicable method of assessing thermal insulation is based on measurm--ieiits of its surface temperature and for many years surface ther=ocouples have been used for this purpose. The temper9ture distribution round the surface of the insulation on a horizontal steam pipe is shown in Fig.l. This indicates that measurements made at a single point caruiot represent the true mean temperature. The tein'-erature distribution is especially distorted when the insulation is defective. Since portable instruments of high accuracy have to be used with surface theriuocouples, alternative use of resistance therr--orleters has been found advar-tageous. Oardl/2The main component of the equipment developed by ORGRES, which 96-58-'-2-21/23 Moasurement of the Surface Temperature of Thermal In.,aiation on 2ipes by Means of Resistance Thermometers is illustrated diagramnatically in Fig.2, is a small, exposed resistance thermometer. Photographs of the resistance thermom- eter and portable measuring bridge are shown in FiG.3. The heat capacity of the resistance thermometer causes some error when it is applied to insulation. As indicated in Fig.4, heat flov.,ing throug-h the insulation cannot compensate for that lost to the thermometer. This error was estimated by comparison with a known instrument. The magnitude of the correction depends on the difference between the temperature measured by the instrument and the anibient air tempercture and is determined from the graph given in FiG.5- Experience shows that by increasing the dimensions of the measuring element, the necessary correction is reduced and a single measurement may be made to obtain the Lnean temperature. Therefore, resistance thermometers have been made in the form of a tape, as shown in Fig.6. This is clipped around the insulated pipe. A comparison between average temperatures obtained in this way and by conventional methods is tabulated and good agreement is claimed. vard:2/2 There are 6 figures,l table and 2 Russian references. 1,, Temperatures-Measurement, .2. "OPIC `AGS: scismicity, earth crust, fault system, Gau4baaL_-3-, earth- !ABSTRACT: An analysis and a reevaluation of the seismic.and micro- selsmic activity in the western Caucasus and the eastern Black Sea indica"es that this region., which according to the data.of Soviet iscismological stations is seismically inactive, is, in fact, a selsmically active region (almost as active as the central and eastern Ca,acaGus) with occurrence of earthquakes of magnitudc'M The !mi;iin~erpretation of seismic activity is attributed to the lack of 1/2 F- AtX 'R AT6034364 nearby seismological stations and insufficient instrument sensitivity. I'L, is established that most earthquakes occur in the upper part of the Eirth's crust. Most of the epicenters of strong earthquakes in the !w3stern Caucasus occur along the shore of the Black Sea.between Sochi Anapa at the intersection of sublatitudinal and meridional faults. Another extensive seismically active region is the meridional transverse z3ne of suberustal faults intersecting the western Ciscaucasust the !w,astern Caucasus, and the eastern part of the Black Sea.-.The-second iseismically active transverse structure in the westcrn,C~Luca3us with nume.,ous earthquakes with magnitude M = 6-7 is the region between Anapi and Novorossiysk. Sublatlitudinal and meridional systems of deep-~ so-atad fault's divide the western Caucasus, western Ciscaucasus, and -3 he .:eastern part of the Black Sea into blocks with diffeient structure. o;' t.'ie E'arth's crust. In the eastern part of the Black.-Sea, the Imoridional system of faults separates two blocks with oduanic and con- '.:'.nental types of crust.
