The furnace operates with several heating systems (resistance, radiation, arc, and electron bear)used individually or in combination. The vacuum chamber can be evacuated to a pressure cf 10-6 rmni Hg. The furnace produces ingots 50 mm in diameter and up to 400 mm long. The charge can be placed in advance or fed during the melting. Zone refining can. be done with a metal bar in the horizontal or vertical position. In vacuum-vapor deposi- tion, the evaporation is done with an electron beam, and the temperature of the substrate is controlled with radiant heat. The furnace has two 45-kw electron guns operating wich an accelerating voltage of 30 kv. Orig. art. has: 1 figure. The complete tracking unit is then formed by coupling the outputs from these two circuits in parallel to a voltage integrator unit from which the integrated output is taken, and may be dis- played for example on a cathode ray oscilloscope. In noraial operation the input signal is fed to both the coarse and the fine selection circuits, the for:.,.er serving to tune the latter, and so maximize its response. Facility is provided, however, for shunting out the fine selection circuit if re- quired; this might be necessary, for example, in tracking a C3 signal having frequent and large fluctuations which would cause the fine circuit to "trig,,ger out", but whose general C> Card 1/3 behaviour can still be followed by the coarse unit. Standard SOV/144-58-11-9/17 Calculation of Signal Selector in TracKin'- Circuit with Fine and Coarse Reading amplifier circuit theory is used to calculate the amplificat- ion coefficients and maximal transmission relations in terms of the threshold parameters and potentiometer characteristics for the selenium and neon units. The results are presented in the form of a nomogram which enables these relations to be determined for any given combination (within limits) of the input signal strength and the phase-settings of the coarse and fine selectors. Graphs are also given to illustrate the phase and amplitude relationships between input and output signals, (a) with both fine and coarse selector circuits operating, and (b) with the fine selector shunted out of Card 2/3 SOV/144-58-11-9/1? The text includes problems in the theory and calculation of dynamic precision of multicoordinate servo drives, principle of design of hiGh-precision multicoordinate systems, and suggestions on how to syn- thesize servo drives for the systems. The material pertains primarily to machine toolB with programmed control, but it can be applied to miny other machines and units de- signed to move the working element on a given trajectory in space. Problems of calcu. lation and principles of design for hiGh-precision onc-dimensional servo drives are'. also included in the text. A. F. loffe in SS_~P -y of solids to glass-like semi- -, To check on the applicability of the band thepi conductors, the authoz-s synthesized glass-like! As2S~!by a procedure described by B. T. Kolomiyets et al. (in: Stekloobraznoye sostoyanlye, 456, 1960) and measured the effect of addition of silver on the shif, of the optical absorption edge on optically polished samples as well as on natural crystals. The measurements were made with a monochromator (UM-2) and photomultipliers (M-19). The transition from the crystal- line state to the glass-like state leads to a shift of the intrinsic absor7tion edge by 44 nm toward the longer wavelengths. Introduction of silver impurities causes a 2 ACC NR, Ar6018573 further shift of the edge toward longer wavelengths. The shift is 20) 30, and 60 rim for impurity contents of 0.03, 0106, and 0.09 Ag atoms per As2S3 molecule. Impurity content larger than 0.1 leads to a strong decrease in the transparency of the samples. The dependence of the absorption coefficient on the wavelength of the incident light is independent of the temperature. Ilie temperature coefficient of the shift of the absorption edge was -7 x 10-4 ev/deg for both crystalline and glass-like As2S3. It is concluded from the results that silver does not produce active local levels, but forms a homogeneous complex with the main substance. This agrees with the assumption that the silver enters the chains making up the structure of the glass-like As283 and shortens them, thus increasing their number, IIAG Mumption was advanced by the authors earlier (Dokl. Bolg. AN v. 18) 10791 1965). The authors thank Professor Iv. Kostov (Mineralogy Department of the Sofia-State University) for supplying the natura,3 W-s_-Z3 crystals, Doctor Vashk for optical measurements.. and B. Kandilarov for a dis- cussion of the results. (Kishinev) ORG: none TITLE: Force method of determinling residual stresses in coatings SOURCE: Elektronnaya obrabotka materialov, no. 5-6, 1965, 117-121 TOPIC TAGS: metal coating, specialized coating, internal stress ABSTRACT: Existing methods (such as G. Sachs', Z. f. Metallkunde, 19, 352, 1927) of determining residual stresses in various (electrolytic, electrospark, welded-on, metal-sprayed) metal coatings have serious drawbacks: they are inapplicable to those cases when elasticity moduli of the coating and the base metal are different; etching off the metal layers is associated with creating additional Card 1/2 ..-'lACC NR: AP7001204 stresses; uniform etching is extremely difficult, etc. Hence, the veracity of results becomes questionable. A new method is suggested in which the residual stress is determined during the process of building-up the coating. A base-metal bar is rigidly fastened to a special holder, and a metal layer is deposited on one side only. Released from the holder, the bar buckles due to a residual stress. By ,applying a measured force to restore the bar to its original shape, the stress 'caused by the coating can be estimated. The bar then is fastened again to the holder, and the next layer is deposited, and so on. The method is claimed to be accurate and applicable to the different -base -coating -metals case.
