ABSTRACT: The authors found that layers of CdS sputtered on films of gold exhibit
4nhomogeneous phases. With backing temperatures oJ' 200-350C, both hexagonal and
cubic phases were observedg whereas films deposited on glass showed the two modifi-
cations at temperatures only up to 250C- From this it seems obvious that the gold
affects the phase composition. These films have moBaio structure of the two phases,
with the cubic phase making up as much as 30%. The hexagonal crystals lie with th~o
(0001) face parallel to the backing; the cubic oryotals with the (111) face parallel
to the backing. Samples heated above 350-400C have the hexagonal phase with no
detectable orientation, differing from the relationship on glass backing. For
short-period annealing (0-5-1 hr), structural chaN;ee ooc=ed only on heating above

TITLE: Diffusion of tin, zinc and cobalt in single crystals
and polycrystals of tin

MEXTt The present work is a -ontinuatiori of previous investigations
of diffusion of tin and indium conducted by other workers. A single
crystal of tin, obtained by the Bridgman method f-Abstracur's not*:
Method not described -7 in the form of a rod, was cut in discs (diameter
13 mm, thickness 5 mm). Thin layers (in the order of I micron) of radio-
active tin, zinc and cobalt were deposited respectively by electrode
position on these discs. The radio isotores used were 123 Sn, 65 Zn and
60 Co. The diffusion experiments were conducted in sealed, OT&CUated
glass capsules placed in a resistance furnace whose temperature was con-
trolled to t 30C, The coefficient of diffusion D in the direction of 450
to the major axis of the crystal was measured by removing a thin layer

from the sample and determining the 13 activity of the samrle by the
integral remainder method. The activity was -Measured by the window
counter G-M. The successive layers (thickness 7-20)1) were removed by
precision lathes to an accuracy of � 1-~ia The graph of the logarithm of
the int*naity of radiation of the removed layers against the square of the
depth gave a straight line with the slopeo(. The diffusion coefficient
D was calculated from D a 1/4' t4% , where t is the time of beating the
sample in hours* D for polycrystals of tin was determined in the same
manner. Results are given in tabulated form. D was found to be dependent
on the diffusion temperatureq and the relationship can be expressed as

temperature in degrees absolute. An examination of polished sections of
polyoryatals of tin shown that the grain size increases with the rise in
heating temperature (i.e., the boundary area between grains decreases).
