TITLE: Waves of Charge Density Oscillations in a Cylindrical Plasma

ABSTRACT: For acoustical waves which may develop in ail ionized gas and
for the ansociated electrostatic oscillations of positive
ions, equation (1) is given in order to calculate the frequency
of ionic o9ciliations. As shown by the present paper, wavelike
processes may be observed in the plasme. of the positive column
at low gas pressure migratinC from the cathode to the axiode.
Ionic oscillations may be observed only if anode oscillation
is absent. The following problems are discussed here: 1) Does
a low limit of pressure exist where no anode zone is present?
2) Does any form of wavelike processes exist in columns without
anode zone? If at all, of what kind is their characteristics?
The experimental arrangement is shortly described to determine
the oscillations by means of' a photoelectronic multiplier and
an oscilloscope. It was found that the anode zone in helium
Card 1/3 disappears spontaneously at a pressure of below 0.9 torr and

at currents of less than 60-120 ma. Tha dependence of the
brightness oscillation amplitudes in tne positive column on the
frequency may mean the presence of a r2sonance frequency
(Figr 1). Table 1 shows the length and resonance of the zones
and, by calculation from them, the pro-jagation velocities of
the anode zone in helium at different Dressures and for dif-
ferent tube diameters. It was found that for defined conditions
in helium (0.01 torr) the positive zone expands throurhout the
tube, and wave processes may be observed which migrate from
the cathode to the anode. The results Df measurement summarized
in table 2 show that frequency enlargeiing diminishes the
length of the cathode zone. Tile temperature of 205.103 OK in
helium at a pressure of 0.01 torr and a current of 30 ma was
determined by means of a Lanemuir search electrode. On the
basis of these data the velocity of waves was calculated.
Finally, similar experiments on arpon and xenon are described
with the disappearance of the anode zone at prei;sures of
3-4-10- 3 torr. The temperature amounted to 84,10 3 oK under the

TEXTs The present paper was read at the 4th International Conference on
ionization processes held at Upsala in j953. The authors carried out ex-
periments for the purpose of explaining the influence exerted by some
phenomena upon the dynamics of the plasma, which are described. The
experiments were carried out in axially symmetric homogeneous and non-
homogeneous magnetic fields within a wide frequency ringe under various
ratios betveen the inductive resistance and the effective resistance of
the plasma. The following of the phepomena mentioned itere investigatedt
the "capture" of the magnetic field1by the SovinA_p~apma."'Vhe skin effectt~%
and the shook waves~ Fig. 1 shows the osoillogram of the complete current
in a discharge in hydrogen, and Fig. 2 shows a slow-mc-tion picture of the

discharge. Measurements of current distribution showed that during the
first half-period of the field variation a re-distribution of the current
according to the vacuum chamber radius takes place. In Fig- 3a the device
for investigating the discharge in an axially symmet:,Aic field, the so-
called "magnetic mirror" is shown schematically. Fig. 3b shows the
dependenue of the current generated by special windings upon radius R and
distance z. From the oscillograms in Fig. 4 it may bo seen that the current
in the gas during the first half-period of the field change is due only to
the effective resistance of the plasm:~.. The current polarity reversal
shown on the cooillograms and the instantaneous current distribution in
Fig. 6a. indicating the existence of a considerable return current prove
the "capture" of part of the magnetic flux by the plasma. The inventiga-
tiona of the skin effect and of the shook waves described showed that in
the here investigated configurations of magnetic systems and vacuum
chambers a cylindrical shook wave is formed in the breakdown in the range

of 5-10 7 10 torr.During its motion it heats the gas and partly ionizes
it. With propagation of the r%ve the conductivity range increases, and
the currents generated within this range may, in the oase of a skin
effect, compensate the gntire exterior magnetic field in the larger part

of the chamber. At high discharge frequencies (300-- '100 kc/s) a
sufficiently high conductivity of the plasma is neceissary in order that a
skin layer having a thickness that is smaller than the height of the
chamber, may occur. Such a conductivity is attained after the passage of
2 to 3 shook waves through the vacuum. At frequencie,B of 60-100 kc/a the
thickness of the skin layer is greater than the heigqt of the vacuum
chambers used in the present investigation and some Dther papers (Refs- 4
and 5), and no effects were observed in the distribution of the current
on the walls and also no screening of the outer field. Evaluations show
that in the here described experiments a qualitative relation
6- w-1/2 is observed. No more accurate data could be found. 6 is the
thickness of the skin layer, w - the frequency of the external fiold.

TEXT! The last of the present authors has described an
electrodynamic vacuum valve in Ref.l. This valve is illustrated
schematically in Fig.l. In this figure the disc 2 is brought
into motion by the forces Fi duo to the interaction betwoexi a
current pulse in the coil 3 and the current induced in the disc.
As soon as the disc rises, gas passes from the region 5 into the
high vacuum region I and the disc returns under the action of the
force Fp which is duo to the pressure of the gas. In this way
an adjustable gas "pulse" can be produced. The present paper
rioports a simple theory of the valve and some of its experimentally
determined characteristics. The pressure distribution on the high
vacuum side was measured with the aid of-a j:iiniaturc ionization
gauge, having a working volume of 0.2 cm-~- It was found that a
directed motion of the gas can be obtained with sufficiently long
channels, the gas velocity being hi~,-)hcr than t~.e velocity of sound.

ABSTRACT: Ionic current oscillograms were used to study the cperating features of a
titanium plasma source in the presence of a magnetic field. 1he magnetic field
effects were found to depend on the polarity of the applied vcltage. With a negative
polarity of the output plate, the total amount of the plasma is reduced. When the
polarity is reversed, the velocity of the plasma front and the plasma's density both
increase, while the velocity of the frontbecomes dependent on the applied voltage.
Mass-spectrometer measurements+have shown that in the presence of a strong magnetic
field the energies of H+ and 11 2 are higher than if no field 13 applied. Another
effect of the magnetic field is that it elirdnates s ingle -charge I and heavy ions and

TEXT: The composition of glass tised for insulators is given.
The glass is melted in a regenerative furnace b~irning natural gas.
with a flame shaped like a horseshoe. The amouiit of glass is
about 200 kg per m2 of furnace area, so that it was possible to
maintain a comparatively low temperature of 141o-1420 OC.
Appropriate quantities of hot glass are delivered to cast-iron
moulds for pre&;sing. At this inRtnnt tlie temperi%tizi-ii of' t1w
is about 1020 OC. When the glass part of the insulator has been
pressed, the inner hollow of the head is of conical shape and is
then shaped by a special device. The time cycle for forming a
glass insulator part, including mould cooling time, is 1 5 njill-

Temperature equalisation and heating for hardening i.,, carried o
in a conveyor furnace for 15 minutes with a gas tempt-rature of
68o OC.. The hot glass parts tire then delivered for hardening t
air-cooled machines with eight spindles. After hardf!ning, the
thermal resistance of hardened parts of insulator rMC -4.5 (Ps-4
increases from 35 OC (in the unfired condition) to 2(1() oC, and

denied that slight damage to the surface layer of thc hardened
glass leads to complete failure of the part, After lardening,
glass parts are submitted to thermal shock tests witl positive
negative temperatures. Insulator strings consisting of
18-22 units are subjected to a one-minute tensile loed of 3,6 t
(types PS-4-5 , nCY-4.5 (PSU-4.5), ncr-4 .5 (Psr..4.5)~

continuous flow of sparks which do not form an arc, The
insulator fittings are 40-5M lighter than those for porcelain
