transmitting rotary motion. The author presents chavacteristics
of the individual elements under various loads and methods for
their design. The author mentions Soviet authors A.I. Petrusevich,
V.N. Kudryavtsev, V.Polyakov, and M. Zubanov, and Bulgarian Engi-
neer D. Khristov. He thanks Doctor Boris Popov, Assistant Pro-
fessor and Engineer K. Arnaudov. There are 47 references: 27
Soviet, 9 German, and 1 Bulgarian.

Abstrrict A case of formation of cracks in consequence of inter-
crystallite corrosion of the metal in riveted seams of drums
of 1)1 atm. sectional water tube boilers of 5 tons per hour is
described. Feedwater was softened with lineY soda and phosphate
to a residual hardness of 0.04 mg-equ. per lit. Recently the
boiler water had the alkalinity of 11 to 1b mp-equ. per lit

Abstract and contained 5 to 15 mg per lit Of P205; the dry residue
was 4000 mg per lit, and the water contained 360 to 400 mg per
lit of Na2SO4, 16.5 mr per lit of Si02) 500 mr per lit of
chlorides, 300 to 400 mg per lit of nitrates, 300 to 500
mg per lit of NaOH and 140 to 200 mg per lit Of 1~1,12CO3-
Corrosion took place at the relative alkalinity of the boiler
water of 15.5% and 1,1003 content up to 60% of the total al-
1--alinity converted into NaOfl. The damaged parts of dnmis were
cut out and corresponding patches were welded in instead.
General regulations concerning the "alkaline brittleness" of
the boiler metal are quoted. Recommendation concerning the
checking of the boiler state are made; it is recorriended to
use phosphate instead of soda for softeninr of wator, Or to use
the scheme liming-Na-cationizing to decrease the NaOli content in
boiler i-,,ater.
