TOPIC TAGSt magnesium, hydrogen. electrochemistry
ABSTRACT: The affect of ammonium ions on the rate of dissolution
of
magnesium and the kinetics of anodic and cathodic processes was
studied.
MG-1 magnesium containing 0.08% Impurity was used in this study.
The
rate of dissolution of Mg, determined from chemical analysis of
the so-
lution for Mg, was found to be practically Intlependent of the
anion con-,
bent, but Increased rapidly upon the addition of ammonium ion.
The cor-!
rosion of magnesium in aqueous solutions proceeds primarily with
the
depolarization of hydrogen. Consequently, the kinetics of the
reduction
of the hydrogen ion were investigated on pure resublimed
magnealum and
on nobler metals because In the dissolution of technical
magnesium, catht-

odic reduction of the hydrogen Ion proceeds primarily with respect
to
the noble metal impurities. Due to the high spontanoous dissolution
currents of pure magnesium it was not possible to obtain the
polariza-
tion of the electrode and the kinetics of hydrogen liberation
could not
be studied. The lowiring of hydrogen overvoltage on other inetals
is
shown In fig. 1. It Is stipulated that the reduction of hydrogen

ABSTRACT: The interaction of K 2PtCl4 with an a9paragine excess
was in-
vestigated in an acid and an alkaline medium. In an alkalinr--
medium only the complex of divalent platinum with asparagine
is formed which has the following composition:
Pt -.-/ltH2-CH-CH 2- CONH
O-CO 2
This 9~lt Is a genuine inner complex salt with cis-configu
ration. On an interaction of K PtC17 with asparagine in an

bound in the platinum complex saponifies faster than free
asparagine. The saponification in the alkaline medium pro-
ceeds according to the following equations:

The properties of the inner complex Salt t(ak)2] are de-
scribed in Wail. The electric conduoti Ygy in aqueous
solutions was determined and the results showed that the
complex is undissociated at low temperatures* On heating,
slight electric conductivity of the solution occurs which is
probably caused by the,sZponification of asparagine. A di-

PERIODICAL: Grazhdanskaya ayistsiyal 1958., Nr 81 p 24 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The article describes, in geneml terms, an
installation for detect-
ing defects in aircraft parts by using the luminescence of a
mixtuxe
of kerosene and aircraft mot-or oil In ultravitlet light.
The In-
sta.1lation, desigrated LDk..], vas built by wi unidentified
repair
establishment of the Aeroflot and is intended for lot
production
during this year. The act up consists cf fcnir separate
cabinets.
In the first cabinet the part is scAked vith the fluorescent
liquid:
in the second It is w%shed mid drL'ed, in the third dusted
vith
magnesium oxide, The fourth cabinet contaInn an ultrayiolet
IAMP for
inspecting a part for defects. The article is accompanied
1-y five

ABSTRACT. The author investigated the effect of some organic
compounds and
halogens (tetrabutylamnionium sulfate, KBr, valeric acid,
sulfosali-
cylic acid, gelatin, etc.) on the behavior of Fe in IN and
6N solutions
of H)S041 in oxygen and in hydrogen atmospheres by the
gravimetric
and ~,olutrietric methods and by plotting polarization
curves. It is
shown that in the presence of 0? molecules the cation,

molecular impurities exhibit an .appreciably retarding
effect on the
rate of either an anodic or a cathodic process or on both
processes
at once, whereas in the absence of 02 (in a hydrogen

they have almost no effect. In the presence of 02 either the

were studied. The ADlogen ions were added in quantities

Gravimetric and

The in-

carried

atmosphere of
air and oxygen# The following were studiedt 1) Rate of

It was found that he mixture of inhibitors investigated
affects
both electrode reaotionst although the cathode reaction#

lution of hydrogeng in retarded to a greater extent. The
protect$-
ve action of the inhibltor increases with rise in
temperature. As
the temperature of the acid solution increaseep so the
overpoten-
tial of hydrogen evolution on iron deoroases and the
extent of
depolarization by hydrogen Increases, The rate of
corrosion under
such conditions should increase. In actual fact howeverp
this
occurs only in pure acid (free from inhibitors). An
increase in
temperature affects the hydrogen depolarization in the
same direc-
tion an an increase in acid concentrations up to a certain
limitj
this limit varies f$r various acids. In the presence of
the inhi-

increases,
the extent of hydrogen depolarization decreases, and hence

One of the main reasons of the high inhibiting effect
displayed
by the mixtures is, in the authors opinion, the
chemical,adoorp-

The formation of orientated multi-layers of indilLdual

of the mixture at the iron surface is possible. There are

of
ferric ions in the corrosion process and to investigate the
effect
of inhibitors on corrosion i% the presence of ferric ions
in eul-

gravimetric

iron was present. Fig. I shows the effect of temperature on
the
corrosion rate in a~r (1# 2P 3) and oxygen (4). The curves
show
that ferrous ions decrease the solubility rate of metallic
iron
by 30 %. The author remarks that a ferric ion concentration
less
than 2.0 mg. mole/liter somewhat decreases the corrosion
rate. lie
suggests that ferric ions play a double rolet Adsorption on
the
surfaces of the metal, and depolarization (reduction to a

of metallic iron). Ferrous fjoine are adsorbed on the
surface# pro-
bably in a manner analogous to other metallic cations
having elec-

investigated in an atmosphere of oxygen in order to retain
the

somewhat decreases both cathodic and anodic polarization,
The sta-

The
general form of the polarization curves is the same as for
the
acids without cathodic oxidizers. There are 3 figures and 5
