ABSTRACT: A drawing and description are supplied of a device for twisting bus
conductors 901, an used at Moskovskiy transformatornyy zavod (Moscow
Transformer Plant). The manual device permite twisting buses sized
25x4.4 mm to 60x5 mm; the latter size requires preliminary heating. A
detachable jaw and tap wrench assembly is provided for each size bus
conductor

TITLE Methods or increasing the economic efficiency of free-piston gas turbine units undel

TEXT: An economically efficient and simple rnethod to widen the common range of operation of a com.
bined gas turbine and free piston gas-generator plant is to separate the inlet of gas from each free piston
unit to a definite nozzle group orthe regulating stage of the lurbine. When sevcral rr" piston units arc fecding
a single intake manifold. the common range of operation uf the rree, piston unit and the gas turbine can be
widened by varying (in steps) the dead clearances (space) in the compressor cylinders of the free piston
unit through the connection of odditional space. Such a method has a definite thermodynamical adventagc
as compared with the recirculation of the scavenging air. The perrormance or the whole plant may also be
improved by %arying the flow switivi in the noMes or the turbine stages.

Abstract : Research made on the feasibility of building solar
thermal plants in sunny regions of the USSR is reported.
The design and output of solar-radiated energy in
discussed. A mathematical analysis computing energy
losses is given. A table summarizes data in megacalories
per hour on the boiler surface. Ten diagrams. Four
Russian references, 1935-1956.

PERIODICAL: Tekhnol. ugolln. rnashinostroyeniya. 1958. Nr 1, pp 11-13
ABSTRACT: Complex experimental and research work results in development
by the VNIIPTUGLEMASH Institute of a new technology for forging
the middle link. A GKM-800 is used to upset a ring with sockets
for two couplings. . Then a 250-t friction press bends the ring, simul-
taneously sizing it for all outside dimensions. Tensile testing and
macroscopic and microscopic investigations show middle links made
by this technology to be more dependable in mine usage. Moreover,
0.3 kg of metal Is saved on each link, and labor requi,-ed for produc-
tion is reduced.

TITLEt The Evaporation of Single Frog Droplets of Various
Liquids during Small Changes in the Reynolds Criterion
of a Flow Passing over the Drops

nauk, Energetika i avtomatika, 1960,Nr 2,pp 185-191 (USSR)
ABSTRACTI This article describes a study of the evaporation of
single free fine droplets (0.050-0.200 mm diameter) of
liquid. The study was undertaken both to establish the
general nature of evaporation and also to obtain
experimental data for use in calculations of droplet
evaporation in flows at low values of Reynolds number.
The investigations were made in the Engine Laboratory of
the Academy of Sciencop USSR. The operaA%-.ive part of the
rig was a vertical elliptic heater one metro long and
30 x 30 mm cross-section. Drops were introduand from
above and arrangements were made to produce a series of
Card uniform drops which at need could range in diameter from
115 1.00 to 1.05 mm. By the time the drops reached the
heater their speed was about 1 metre per second. As they

passed through the heater they were photographed ten
times through a window by means of a special camera.
From the photographs it was possible to construct curves
of change of speed with time as the droplets passed the
window. Numer,-~-,!s tests were made for each set of
conditions and ~aen the droplet diameter was calculated
by means of formula (0.1). The correctness of this
method of assessing the diameter was checked by measure-
ments of relatively large dropst the differences between
this and the photographic method of measurement were
about 3%. It should be mentioned that A.M. Zotov!
V.L. Sokolov and V.A.-Segen' took part in the experimental
work. The first measuremeRts of the rate of droplet
evaporation were made In 1882 by B. Sreznevskiy, who
formulated the law that during evaporation the change in
the drop surface Is linear with time. This law is
Card Undoubtedly valid for motionless drops but there is some
215 doubt whether it is true for drops in a flow of airt 'Che
Present authors consider that it is only approximately
