TITLE-. Phase composition of cobalt condensates during the initial
stage of their formation

ABSTRACT: Mic published daM on Die phase composition of Co films
obtai'ned by vacuum
condensation arc highly contradictory; this is apl-Nirently
associated with the non-uniformity
of experimental conditions. Accordingly, the au0iors performed a
systematic investigation of
the phase composition of these films as a function of the chief
parameters determining the
manner of growth of tho con8onsatos: 1) substrate temperature T.; 2)
condensation rate w;
3) de-rec of vacuum, 4) effective film thicluioss h. 9 .98 puro Co
iras condensed on carbon
substrates in a vaccuum of 10-4_10-5 mm jig at w = -500 X/min and T,
= 20 - 450-C. The
resulting Co thin films (h = 1-70 1) were subjected to
electron-diffraction analysis. Findings:
the following phase transitions, Are observed with increase in h at
TS = 20-300*C:, quasimorphic

change when the substrate temperature is -350*C. Below this
temperature Coll is the predo-
minant phase, while above this temperature Coo predominates. When
w= 180 A no oxide
formation could be detected by electron-diffraction analysis,
regardless of Ts. jhus it may be
concluded that the rocesses of the formation mid reduction of
oxides are an essential factor
only when w < 150 1 /mba at T. ."e 1,A . With
