Abstract The study of sail fama of the
Novorossiyak-Dzhankhota
region (North-western Caucasus) at the elevation of

200 m above sea level shows that the soil fauna
consists
basically of species which have mcaiterranian origin.
The mjority of the representatives of soil fauna
possess
an insignificant ability to resettlement (Haploembia,
Myriapoda, leopoda, Ltuabricidae etc). The soil
fauna of
biotopes, less changed by the activity of man, is
closest
to the Mediterranian. Therefore it is possible that

ABSTRACTs The lot All-Union Conference on these problems took
place in
Moscow from November 25 to 291 1958. It was attended by
ripresentatives of the Ukrainskaya SSR, the Baltic and Central
Asiatic Republiesq especially from Uzbekistan, altogether
115 persons. From the many lectures which were heard the
author briefly mentions the followings
M, S. Gilyarov spoke of basic research problems of the zoology
of invertebrates and the tasks of soil zoology.
A. 1. Zrazhevskiyj V, Ks Eglitisp S. Io Ponomareva, and
Vo Fe Hikolyuk reported on problems of soilproduotivity in
connection with the activity of invertebrates and their soil-
forming r819.
I* Ie Maleviah reported on the investigation of earth worms.
M. M. Alsynikovy Kazanskiy filial Akademii nauk SSSR (Kazan'

V, Ko Baluyev (Ivanovo) charaoterized the soil fauna of

played by auto in forests.
P. Ve Matekin (Moscow) reported on the variability of the
molluscs inhabiting the soil in connection with different
oonditions of life.

and the neoessity of its integration into the number of
problems ooordinated by the AS USSR was emphasized, The next
oonferenoe on soil zoology will probably be hold in Xiyev
Gard 2/2 in 1961.

ABSTRAM World wide socialism has changed the political, economic and
spiritual life of hundreds of millions of people. Socialist
governments are promoting"scienoe with all available means.
Since 1950, almost all academies of sciences in people's de-
mocraoies have set up one-year or five-year plans for research
workl,,covering problems of special importance and the scientific
training of young scientists.
The author mentions a series of examplesi. the Chinese
scientist Chzhay Zheni has developed a method of manufacturing
superdurable pig iron# with properties similar to those of steel.
Atomic research has been extremely suocessfult the USSR has
built the first commercial nuclear pow *dp plant in the world,
Czechoolovakia has established an Institute of Nuclear Physics
and intends to build its first nuclear power plant by.1960.
In Polandt near Warszawa and at Krakap, large atomio reea~rch
centers are under construction,. Yugoalavla. conducts nuclear
