was devoted to the problem of the dynamic investigation of the

PERIODICALt Testnik vysshey shkoly, no. 5, 1960t 43-47
TEXTx The author discusses the teaching problem connected -with the theory
of mechanism# and machines In Institutes of teconology. A discussion on
the mentioned topic in the OVestnik vyslh7y ;hkoly" #;a,,* rise to this
article. The articles of A. V. Antovil 19 9, no. 8)j D. 1. Kostyuk,
S. I. Shubovich, Yu. Ya. Xovylin, N. P. Rudenko and V. A. 0aetskiy,are
mentioned in this connection and also 0. A. Blokbj~'S. I. Gliyzer,a4d, the
opinion of a department (1960t no. I). It is the opirion of the author
that the student should obtain a well rounded knowled;e in the general
theory of mechanisms and machines and the kinematic aid dynamic aal(;Ula-
tions of machineal lectures and laboratory work are suggested for this
purpose. A special training should mainly be obtained during laboratory

work and within the course. The author criticizes the lordency to shorlen
the education in this field, and calls the attention to tke Tamt, that d~*
to increasing automation, engineers with a broad educat:.or only, will be
able to cope with problems confronting them. The specialization sbould be
made on the job. The author reports that the principle cf a general
education of engineers is especially promoted abroad; lost fear he was
able to see this when he visited 13 universities in the USI and several
institutes of technology in Western Germany. Aocordiog to the author,
lectures about the theory of mechanisms and machines should mainly deal
with mechanical systems and hydraulic mechanisms to s oortain degree.
Electric and electron machinery should be taught In specLa-.. aourses. Tht
author suggests to divide the whole course into two partils; one part which
he calls "Theory of Mechanisms" should deal with questions of the structuxe
of mechanisms including the kinematic and dynamic analyivx and also tho
"kinetostatic" calculation. Furthermore the question of synthesis of
mechanisms should be dealt with. The other part '"ftory ~~f Kaollines"
should deal with questions of the structure, i.e., the :icnnection between
the kinematics of machines and the technological operaticna done by them.

Some basic questions are emphasizeds The author thlftkm tie soction
"Structures of Mechanisms" is very importantt and that qu-)qtjons of
analysis should not be compared with those of synthealol siore time and
consideration should be devoted to questions of dynamics; geometric and
analytic methods of investigations should be combined without disadvantage
for one of these methods; application of the expressiom of the so-called
"exchange mechanism" is justified. A. M. kntoville ariticiam of existing
textbooks is said to be too subjective. Rio criticism cotld be objsotlyl
if those books could be compared with now books. To o*ncludut the autbolr
mentions that it would be necessary for a committee of the ministerstva
vy9shego i arednego spetsialln6go obrazovaniya RSYOR or SSSR (19inistries~
for Special Training in Colleges and High Schools RSFSH or VSSR) to check
the problems with regard to contents of acursee and ~ootti3a in the timed
table, as outlined in the resolation of the Seminar po teorli mashin i
mekhanizmov pri Institut mashinovedeniya AN SSSR (Seminsir !or Theory of
Machines and Mechanisms of the Institute of Machines LS U33R), An All-
Union Conference would be in order. The author suggesto to give reports
about methodical subjects in the seminar. There is I Soviot-bloc referemos.

ABSTRACT:
At present, in each area of human scientific activity, it is ne masary to
consider not only the results of completed research, t-ut also tile prospects
for scientific development. Consequently, the popularization a-* science has
become a more and more vital stage in its development, and tNe participation
of the scientist in scientific propaganda is an integral pArt o' creative
scientific activity. k1hile there are many examples of scitntEs :a partic1patLnS
4n propaganda work, tfj tremendous reserves tweded for supplamettting
qualified lecturing -cadres ara of gat less than sufficient avai-ability.
Only 90,000 of the 660,000 scientific workers in the country participate in
the society '"Lnaniye." Young scientisca particularly should be attracted
