TITLE& Polymorphous single crystal - single crystal transition
in
p-dichloro benzene
PERIODICAL: Akademiya nauk SSSR. Doklady, v. 148, no- 5, 1963,
1065-1068
TEXTs By a microscopical study of the behavior of p-dichloro
benzene
crystals in glycerin it was established that aip transition
takes place
above 30.80C (the temperature of phase equilibrium), and that
the tempera-
ture of a+p transition increases wit h increasing purity of the
substance
and perfection of the crystals. Perfect crystals mostly melted
in the
a-phase at 52-70C. Two types of a4+p transition were observed:
single-
centered and multi-centered. From microphotographs it was
evident that the
polymorphous single crystal - single crystal transition-is due
to the
growth of a bounded single crystal from a solid monocrystalline
medium
which is not in the equilibrium phase. The direction of growth
can be
varied by changing the temperature. The mutual orientation of
the a and
lattices was investigated by an attempt to find an answer to
the following
Card 1/i

3 questionst (1) Is there a fixed connection between the
orientations of
the a and p lattices? (2) If so, what is their mutual
orientation? (3) If
nott is there a discrete selection of possible mutual
orientations, or are
they purely accidental? Based on a series of Laue patterns
taken from one
and the same crystal over the entire transition period, it
was established
in a very carefully planned experiment that such a great
number of lattice
orientations develops Jn the new phase, and that their random
growth
becomes probable. The Laue patterns_taken from a crystal
subjected to
10 transitions revealed that all the A-phases, had lattices
of different
orientation. Monocentered as well as multicentered transition
could be
observed in the same-orystal, and perfect crystals were
obtained from non-
ordered crystals. Two inconsistent conclusione are drawn from
these ob-
servations, whioh must still be cleared up. (1) Since the
mutual orienta-
tion was, never repeated in the numerous a-~P transitions
observed, non-
ordered transition should be assumed; (2) The orientation of
the a-orystals
in a series of a-4Aia--,,A transitions was often the same,
which makes an ordered
transition probable. It is suggested that question I may be
answered in
the affirmative and that a fixed relationship may be assumed.
A certain
analogy to the polymorphous monocrystal - polyorystal
transition is evident.
The difference between the two types of transition is
probably due to

ABSTRACT: The experimental determination of acoustic electron
paramangetic
resoz'iance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMP) in liquids
and gases depends
on tbe magnitude of the thermal and acoustic displacement of
molecules at the
resonance frequency. The determination is possible under ultrasonic

bringing about a change
in the decTree of saturation in the acoustic conversion of EPR and
NMP signals in the
same sample. The coherence of acoustic displacements makes it
possible to
identify the effects of spin induction and echo; an analysis of
mathematical expres-
sions for the magnitude of magnetic absorption as a function of
ultrasound, band
widt4h, and resonance frequency indicated the real possibility of
observing these
effects in liquids and gases. An evaluation is made of the
probability of the relaxa-

interaction of/-/e with

TEXT: The theory of the thermal conductivity of dielectri
which is determined by lattice vibrations.,has so far been only
concerned with the scattering of lattici vibrations in cases
whc:re
scattering by impurities, defects and free carriers can be
neglected. However, it is pointed out that there is a further
mechanism of scattering which is due to spontaneous decay of a
phonan owing to the polarization of the electron-hole vacuum in
which (1) a Phonon _q excites an electron -from a state k . in
the

valence band into a state ki in the conduction band, and then an
eaectron in the state k 1 experiences a transition to a state

from the state k 2 in the v'alence band experiences transition
into the state Ic 0 with the creation of a phonon ql and then
an electron k 1 goes into k 2 with the creation of a phonon j%11
The transition matrix element is evaluated for both processes and
a quantitative condition is derived for this mechanism to become
appreciable. It is concluded that the process can, in fact,
become appreciable in sufficiently pure semiconductors.
