States that research has been conducted
since 1950,
at the Sci-Res Inst of Foundations and
Substruc-
tures, on cement-soil mixtures for building
foui~da-
tions in those regions not having rubble,
gravel,
and sand. For such mixtures can use loess
and
loess-type loams having a plasticity number
of
5 to 12, and a cement not lat.-er than
quality 300.
Deacriboz ruethod of preparing mixture,
proportional
parts, and properties (compression
strength, freez-
ing resistance). The strength of a mixt
contain-
ing 7-14 (by weight) of cement varies from
30-80
kg/sq cm. First successful use of such
mixture by
Minme hstroy trust No 93, on construction
of fol-
loving foundations of Chardzhou
superpbosphate
plant: machine shop (100 m long), boiler

ABSTRACT: The investigations of B. V. Deryagin, P. A.
Retinder,
Mak_Ben zmacBainf4' and others have shown that the
process of cementation is a phenomenon of the attrac-
tive forces between various bodies having residual
electrical forces on their surfaces and un oriented
layer of molecules In a thin layer of the udhering
substance. According to Mak-Ben, the layer of ori-

potential may extend for hundreds of molecular diameters.
Applying this to the process of chemical cementation of sandy
soil, it may be statea that if the soil consists of particles
0.5 to 0.05 mm in diameter, the diameter of the capillaries
will be 0.07 to 0.007 mm. When all the capillaries are
filled,
the layer of cohesive material adjoining a particle will be
3.5
to 35 A. Thus,even the thinnest; layer will be hundreds of
thousands of times the thickness of a single molecule, taking
the molecular diameter as 10-8cm. It is clear that even such
a layer decreases the firmness of the ground. In laboratory
experiments compressed air was passed through the ground
after
forcing a solution of waterglaso into it. The compressed air
drives considerable waterE,,lass to the periphery. After the
air is passed through the ground, a solution of calcium
chloride
is forced through. The t!.me it takes to force the calcium
chloride through is two to five times less than it is if the
compressed air is not used first. The firmed samples produced
in this way do not have the fractures that are observed in
other
samples when the air is not used, The application of air is

especially advantageous w,len using waterglass of high
concen-
trations. The firmness of a sample strengthened by having air
passed through it is 25 to 30 percent higher than it is for
samples in which the air Is not used. In addition, the
passage
of compressed air makes it unnecessary to change injectors
before forcing in the calcium chloride.

attempting to determine whether biological changes
occur-
ring in sclerosis originate in the blood or in the
