Geiger counters were used .oil Cosmos-17 to record the intensity of
cosmic radiation
beyond the 13arth's radiation bells as a function of L coordinates.
The average

radiation Jmtehsity was found to:vary from 0.5 to 3-0/cm
and from 9 to :221cm2/see for gamna quanta. A hipb-latitude chopping
of the cosmic
ray spectrip was observed for hardness R = 1.8. A cosmic ray
"equator" was con-
structed far-altitudes of hoo-61jo km. Cosmic ri~y showers produced
b2r the inter-
action of high-energy particles -with the satellite body atangles of

ABSTRACT t In May 1963 scintillation and Geigtw counters were used to
measure the

TITLE: Cell division and nucleic acid metabolism in the muco-
sa of the small intestine after treating animals with
radio-protective substances
PERIODICAL: Radiobiologiya, v. 1, no~ 6, 19619 953 - 957
TEXT-, The authors wished to study the effects of the most effi-
cient radio-protective substances (P-mercaptoe-thylamine,
adrenali-
ne, acetylcholine and combinations of these) on cell division and
nucleic acid metabolism in the mucosa of the small intestine in
normal animals. Data in this field ari, few and contradictory.
Opti- V~
mally protective doses of the named s-~;~betances were given to
198
white rats, of 200 - 230 g weight, ani 179 guinea-pigs of
300-450 g
weightp of bcth sexes. The animals wer,e killed 10 - 15 mins.,
and
1 and 3 hours, later. To study nucleic acid metabolism, 16 - 20
mi-
crocuries of 32p in sodium phosphate, in 0.2 - 0.3 ml of aqueous
solution, were given subcutaneously immediately after the

Sec-
tions of intestinal mucosa were treated with 10 %
trichloroacetic
acid and separation of the nucleic fraction and fractionation
of
DNA was carried out by a modified Schinidt-Tangauzer method.
Radio-
phosphorus uptake, measured with a -2 (B-2) counting apparatusp
indicated the rate of nucleic compound synthesis. In studying
cell
division, the control and experimental animals were killed at
the
same time. Mitosis was estimated on 10:Lxed and stained
diodenal sec-
tions, 'the results being assessed sta-VIistically by
Fisher-Styuden-u-
2s method. P-mercaptoethylamine and acetylcholine had no
effect on
the metabolism of nucleic acids and the DNA fraction,
Adrenaline
caused marked depression (60 88 %) ~.n both animals, as did
adre--
naline plue acetylcholine (72 92 %), 75 rats and 79
g*1jinea-pigs
were used for mitosis estimation. P-ME~rcaptoethylamine aMd
acetyl--
choline caused a transient depression of mitotic activity
which de-
veloped rapidly (15 mine) and was greEAer in rate (24 - 31 %).
Ad-
renaline caused a gradual depression In guinea-pigs (28 %) and
rats
(29 %)maximal In three hours. Adrenaline plus acetylcholine
caused
rapid, prolonged depression. The acticns of acetylcholine were
con-
firmed by supplementary experiments. It seems that
acetylcholine

TITLE: A Linear Induction Potentiometex for General

ABSTRACT: An induction potentiometer is described here. It
especial-
ly serves as a substitute for the measuring slide wire
in systems of control and regulation. The potentiometer has
a maximum*angle of rotation of '1800 ( 900). Then follows
the description of the potentiometer and the method for its
calculation. The fundamental foinulae given in Ref 2 are
used in the calculation. Here the calculation is given
for the case where the feed voltage bl, the magnitule of

A Linear Induction Potentiometer for General Industrial
Determinathns
mensions of the potentiometer,, *.-,he number of windir~gs,
the
wire diameter of the primary and the secondary winding are
determined. The magnitudes of the primary current and of
the secondary current as well as the voltages at the out-
put are calculated for the mode of operation tinder load. -
The magnetic system assumed here, permits to construct a
linear induotion-potentiometer for general industrial pur-
poses. The results of the =~reL-t- and voltage-calculatione
of actual constructions under various methods of operation
agree with the experimental dat.i. The characteristics of
these potentiometers surpasses those of the contactless
position indicators with regard to the domain of limearity
of the characteristics. their srrmaetry, as well as the low
unbalanced residual voitages in the compensation scheme.
There are 11 figures and 3 refe--?enceE which are Soviet.
