TITLEt The Effect of Residual Stresses on the Behavior of Conpressed
Cores
PERIODICAL: Svarochnoye pi-coizvodstvo, 1960, No. 11, PP- 15-18
TE)CT- There are only few data available relating to the effect of
resi-
duekl stresses on the behavior of compressed cores accounting for a
Ioss of their
durability. M. Khorn attempted to determine the possible maximum
effect of
residual stresses on the durability of compressed cores by the
theoretical method
using data presented by Engesser, Karman and Shenli. Khorn concludes
that resi-
dual stresses of the first order In the case of their most
unfavorable distribu-
tion may cause a considerable reduction of the carrying capacity of
hinge-fasten-
ed compressed cores. According to the modulus theory, the ctitical
load may drop
to 60% due to residual stremses, depending on the flexibility of the
core, which
is determined by the ratio of elastic critical. stresses ("Ruler
stresses") to
the yield limit. A still greater drop of the critIcal load is
attained on the
basis of the Engesser-Shenli tangential-modulus theory. In 1958,
investigations
were made by the Department of Welding at the Glivitsk Polytechnic
lbstitute

The Effect of Residual Stresses on the Behavior or Compressed Cores
that specimens which have not been hardfaced and do not possess a
great flexibil-I
ity, do not bend until attaining the yield limit. Hardfaced
speciments bend much
earlier and the deflection increases rapidly after having attained a
certain
value. As a reault of the investigation it was established that the
aurve of the
critical load of hardfaaed and not hardfaced pipes was located much
higher'than
the Engesser-Shonli and the :Rngesser-Kaman durvea. The conclusion
is drawn that
residual stresses exert a noticeable effect on the behavior of short
hinge-fasten-V/
ed cores; they reduce the wignitude of the critical load and
accelerate con-
siderably the transverse deflection of the core. The decrease of the
critical
load is basically confirmed 'by the experiments for low flexibility.
However, it
should be noted that at an increased load, the nature of the core
deformation
with asymmetrically distributed residual stresses resembles more an
eccentric
compression than elastic ultimate compression.

K111HURGUA 1956, 3 (57-62)
From 1931 to 1954 fit 24 cases mesenteric cysts were
diagnosed, In 2 cases cysts
of the omentum and in It cases retroperitoneal cysts. The
patients' ages varicd
from 3 days to 12 yuara, there were 25 boys and 12 girls.
Two groups were formed
according to the anittomical structure and oripin of the
cyst. In the first group were
placed (1) lymphangioma and hacmangiarna-,(2)
enterocystorna; (3) dcrmoid and tera-
told cysts; and (4)cpsta from the embryonic organ3 of the
retro-pl.'ritoncal region.
In the second group were: (1) parasitic cysts (echinococcus)
; (2) traumatic cysts in-
cluding haernatoma, The most frequent form was lymphangiomn
(11 pationts). The
cysts are most frellpently localized in the mesentery ~)f
the arnall intet;t1ne (10
cnses). Retroperlwneal cysts were observed in 7 patients.
The clinical develop-
ment of tile cyst coil be divided into 3 periods. Tile first
characterized by tile ab-
se.~ce of manifesta!tIon of disease, tile second by painij
in tile abdomen (sometimes
convulsive), by the distortion of the cyst, by peritonitis
and impermeability. The
third period In whi-ch slow death occurs due to exhaustioa
or to other complications.
The lymphatic cysta are distinguished by a clear
fluctuation. X-ray Investigation.

first place must go

TITLE: Use of the refractometric method for the quick
determination
of latex ..-oncentration
PERIODICAL: Zavodskaya laboratoriya, v. 27, no. 2, 1961, 181
TEXT: The dependence o:r the refractive index on the
concentration of the
following latex types was studied: ABXE3-70 (DVKhB--70), nairit
L30
GBX(SVKh), methyl acrylate latext and CKC-30 (SKS-30). The
studies were
made with a universall:'J[Y(RLU) refractometer. A linear
dependence having
been established, the ODricentration of latex solutions cart be
well determined
refractometrically. The refraotometric method was compared with
the gravi-
metric one, and it was cistablished that within 2 min the latex
content can
be determined refractDmetrically with an accuracy of' + 1%. The
deviations
of the determination recults between the two methods mentioned
lie between
+ 0.4 and 0-3%. Theret are I figure and I table.
