the interval of time between the Uppe.r-Carboniferous and the
second part of the Lower Permian periods. The author further
gives a detailed petrographic description of main intrusive
rocks and -,heir mineralogical and chemical composition (ac-
cording to A.N. Zavaritakiy) (tables 1 and 2). It can be
seen from Ahe petrographical deacription that diorites,
quartz dioiitea and granodiorites have common mineralogical
features, whereas the comparison of thoir chemical composi-
tion shows two sharply different intrutiiva series, diorites-
granDdlorite;i and granites. Diorites, quartz diorites and
granodiorittis are characterized by a relatively low content
of silica arid large content of alumina# magnesio-forrous and
calcareous components. It can be said that diorites, quartz
diorites and granodiorites are an allied magmatic formation
with two stages of their formation, the diorite stage and the
granodiorite and quartz diorite stage (ftgure 4). The leuco-
cratic granilea and granite-aplites are characterized by an

ably they represent a residual fusion of the granitoid

magma. As to the hydrothermal barytiv veins with polymetallic
mineralization found in the intrusions and their aureols, the
author thiriks that they originated from the minor intrusions,
"contaminaied" with elements of copper, lead and barium,
these intrusions thus being the ore-bearing formations. In
the hydrothermal stage of development 4~,f the intrusive pro-

ABSTRACT: The introduction of 5 to 10 porcant portland
oement in
structural gypsum increases its utrength and moiRture
resistarce. This procedure maken it possible to use
gypsum Froducts in climates with a relative humidity up
to 85 percent. The introduction of portland cement in
large proportions (20 to 40 percont of the weight of
the gypsum and coment mixture), silthough it also
increases the strength of 0trUCtUral gypsum hardening

ABSTRAM This determin%tion represents one of thc important tasks
in the
establishing of hydrotechnical buildings on sea-shores. The
current
methods for cabulating the mobile sand masses are very inaccurate
and hard to apply to sand-shores with a large width of the allu-
vial flow. Tae possibility of studying these motiona directly in
the underwater slope of the shore was gIven by the method of
color-
ing the sard with organic luminophores. For this purpose and
overhead chitin- and trolley conveyor, 200 m wide, vias
established
which permi-tted an investigation durinf,, the storm I~n the zone
of
the moste iatensive displacement of the sand material. The section
viere work was done is a shoal-like accumulative shore near Anapa

TEXT. The year 1959 marks the 10th anniversary of' ChENIS (Black
Sea Ex-
perimental Scientific Resekrch Station of the Institute of
Oceanology). During
this period a number of acaievements contributed to the success
of the Black Sea
Station. In the Laboratorlya morskoy elektroniki (Laboratory of
Naval Electron,-
ice) the first underwater rV sets were produced, with w1doh the
scientific re-
search submarine "Severyanka" is equipped. The same laWratory
desilped a device
for checking the filling up of the trawl net with fish. ChMS has
also devel-
oped an electromagnetic method of measuring currents whIle the
ship to moving.
Important works are being conducted on the problem of d3-namics
and mDrphology of

of problems pertaining
to the geology of the Blaok Sea and the Mediterranean
tiottoms. The jubilee con-
ference was opened by K.V. Negly&d, Director of the
Stittion, which comprises at
present 9 laboratories with a staff of 125 men. Three
expeditionary ships are
at their disposal. The following papers were presentedt
N.A. Aybulatov, on the
results of 5 years of work by the station concerning t:,ie
shift of alluvia (sand
deposits) under natural conditIonso Under the superviBion
of V*P. Zenkovich, a
method of direct observa,,ion of the dynamics of alluvia
had been elaborated by
means of luminophores, enabling the author to measure the
absolute speed of sand
movements at different weells. Ye.N. Yegorov, on the
dynamics of sUbaqueous
sand banks and on the morphology of' the Waok and the Azov
Seas, tracing baokt.,e
origin of sand banks to 2 basic causeq, viz. waves anti
undercurrenis. B.A. Schj,-
lyak spoke on waves on the surface of quick sands,
deveribIng the relationship
which exists between ripples on the bottom of the sea
(ground deformations) and
wave currents. Thus it is possible to analyze petrifled
ripples and determine
the kind of waves which have created them.. Great
