ABSTRACT: Structural medium-carbon, low-carbon. and mild steels were
tested in sea watei, tap water, in marine, industrial, and gas-
and-vapor atmospheres, -ind in the scil. The corrosion w,:.s de-
termined by change in we'.ght. Visud! eximination of the speci-
mens after corrosion was also performed, It was shown that in
all steels exposed to a gds-,And-vapor tmcbphere of arsenic il
solutions (at a chemical pl.nt) a maximum corrosion was observed
about 10 times greater than that in a mur.ne iir atmosphere. The
difference in the ratio of maximum to minimum corrosion losses
in the mediums under investigation vdries from I to 10. The rn~.Axi-
mum losses occur durins the initi.ki test period (3-6 months).
Depending upon the composition of the steel, the ratio of corro-
Card I /Z sion losses from one to another r,inged irom I to .1. In the m-.t-

ABSTRACT: Fhaso equilibria in the ternary LiF CsF - YF3 system have been investigat-
led by the visual-polythermic and themo(Taphic- mol~aods,-using the optical (;rado of
IUF and analytical Urado of CsF. Yttrium fluoride was proparod by the dissolution or
Iyttriun tittorate in twice distilled hydrofluoric acid in the prosenco of njunonium carbon

Iwas roasted at 30;Zoa'. Cooling curves were recorded with the aid of a differential
IPt-Pt-Rh thermocouple in a platinum crucible. The data obtained by the authors for the
LiF-Yr- system difforad from the first data obtained by Yee P. Dorgunov (DokI. AN SSSR,

ABSTRACT: The article constitutes a pa of a study of Tomplexing in rare earth
fluoride and alkali metal fluoride melts~ The system Na , K p Y3'1'li r was studied/
by the v1sual-Y.-olythermal and thermographic methods, and the differential cooling
curves wore recorded vith a Kurnakov pyrometer. The system has four crystallization
fields (see Figure 1), three of which belong to the pure components, aiij one to

The closer the field intensities of the cations, i.e., the closerp is to unity, the
more similar will be the influence of the cations on the anion, and the less likely
will ba the formation of a complex compound. Ratios of the field intensities of
alkali metal cations to those of rare earth cations were calculated. On the basis
of these considerations, the nature of the interaction in systems which have, t yet

TITLE: On the Question of the Accuracy of a Twin-Gyro Gyrosphere.
(K voprosu o tochnosti dvukhgiroskopnoy girosfero
PERIODICAL: Tr. Leningr. in-ta aviats. priborostr., 1956, Nr 11, pp 3-15
ABSTRACT: An investigation of the influence of the accuracy of the functioning of
a twin-gyro compass of various regimes in the eletrical energizing
of'gyroscopes having a stationary base. The A. shows the investi-
gation of two specific cases: 1) Gyroscopes having constant but diffe-
rent kinetic moments, and 2) Gyroscopes subject to brief (impulsive)
perturbations. In both instances it is assumed that the differences
between the kinetic moments are small in comparison to their sums.
In the first case it is shown that the axis of the gyrosphere will not
align itself with the plane of the meridian (this is obvious), and the
magnitude of the declination angle is determined. In the second case
the magnitude of the error of the device at the time of the termination
of the short-term perturbation is determined. At the end of the paper
/Z a graph is shown on the experimental investigation of the azimuthal
Card I motion of the axis of the gyrosphere during the short-term perturbation.

On the Question of the Accuracy of a Twin-Gyro Gyrosphere. (Continued)
ABSTRACTOR'S NOTE: The author does not consider the influence of the inaccura-
cies in the balancing of the gyrosphere on the functioning
of the device. Since the latter factor is of appreciable magnitude wheu~the variation
of the kinetic moments is sufficiently large, the results of the exper'ityiental investi-
gation can be readily explained not only in terms of the differences between the
operating regimes of the individual gyroscopes, but also by any inaccuracy that might
exist in the balancing of the gyrosphere. (D. R. Merkin)

TOPIC TAGS: polarography, phthalonitrile, quantitative analysis
ABSTRACT: In connection with the increased production of phthalonitriles, a need
exists for convenient methods of determination of tere- and isophthalonitriles. 111is
work deals with the quantitatAve polarogra,.)hic determination of the above isomers.
In dropping-mercury-electrode' xperimentj conducted against a 0.05 N LiCl background
the basic reduction curves of the two isomers were shown to be of the following type
(see Fig. 1): .-

The pronounced plateaus facilitate determinationof the diffusion cunrVM The calibra--
tion curve was based on the first wave of terephtnalonitrile, since its second wave
tends to overlap with the first wave of isophthalonitrile. Quantitative determina-
tions by this method differ by only 2-4% from those obtained by melting point deter-
mWations. The two methods are thus mutually verifying. Orig. art. has: 4 figures
