-hospital' at Teplice in 1958-59 ~Lre discussed; main attention is
'paid to suicidal attempts by poison* 1.28% attempted suicide in
this way in'58, and 2,10 in'59. The most frequently used sub-
stances were barbiturates and analgesics, and trichloroethylene.
Only one attempt ended in a death; the patient ingested 20 g of
Dormiphen. Poisoning with CO in industrial accidents Is discussed.
Importance of quick aid in this typo of poisoning is stressed*
Most suicide-attempting persons showed an unstable mental char-
.acter; psychiatric problems leading to suicide are disousseds
and possibilities of preventive mental hygiene are evaluated*
Cooperation between general practitioners and psychiatrists in

Abstract (Authors' English summary modified]: The winter-spring
1952 =in 1-denza epidemic was caused by the same strain that caused
the 1957 pandemic and the 1959 epidemic, namely virus A . The
authors describe the characteristics of the isolated st ains, the
dynamic evolution of the anit-influenza antibodies, and some
clinical and epidiemological peculiarities of the epidemic. Be-
cause of the repeated immunizations during the 3 epidemic waves
caused by the A strain and the induced resistance, the authors
expect the inte;_epidemic period to extend until the antigenic
structure of the circulating influenza virus strains undergoes
large changes.

Abstract LAuthors' English summary modifiedj: A report on a study
OT 1,114 children from-children's communities ir. which there were
diphtheria outbreaks. Among these children 117 were found to be
carriers of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, including 11-who had a
positive Schick reaction but shoved no clinical symptoms of the
disease. Antitoxin titration was carried out for 6 of the 11
Schick-positive carrieral and in 2 of them the level of antitoxin
was found to be below the accepted protective value. It is assumed
that the protection was due to antibacterial immunity or to local
immunity.

The investigation revealed hypothermia of the affected limbs. the temperature be-
ing sometimes as much as 2* C. lower than that of the corresponding healthy limb.
The temperature change depends on the degree of paralysis if this is sufficiently
extensive; in monoplegias with complet,? paralysis of all muscle groups there are
temperature differences of 1-2* C. ; the local temperature differences lead to
modifications of the skin temperature over the whole surf-~ce. lieliotherapy rapid-
ly raises the skin temperature (2-4* in 30 min.); in paralysed limbs the tempera-
ture changes in an anarchic manner with a maximum at the distal extremity (these
modifications last only 15-30 min.). Mud-baths cause more lasting temperature

An investigation is made Into the relationship between lowered skin temperature of
the paralysed area of the body and the degree of the paralysis. There seems to be
a ratio between them. The temperature of the skin seems also to be influenced by
the temperature of the environment. Finally, the Influence of hellotherapy is gone

into. It is shown that a complete course of such heat therapy cannot give any
lasting Increase of the Wn temperature of the paralysed area.

Two cases of fracture in patients with Addison's disca3e, the oaly two to be found
among a total of 35,000 fractures. demonstrated that the fractures heal normal!-.-
in these patients as well. One was a case of vertebral fracture, treated with im-
mobilization in a plaster cast, and one a fracture of the clavicle. treated with
osteosynthesis. Neither the metabolic disturbances of Addison's disease ncr the
cortisone treatment appeared to influence the healing process of the fractures.

during four years at the Central Military Hospital. Best
results were obtained with total meniscectomy, which is recom-
mended oVer partial meniscectomy; complete recovery was
obtained in all patients, with only a small percentage re-
maining on a limited-activity status. Average convalescence
time after surgery was 45 days.

TE)7f: The experience acquired by the authors at the start of the betatron
of the Institute of Atom Physics in Bucharestis reported. Methods of observing
the behaviour of the electron beam on the first revolutions are described, To
improve the electron capture conditions and, consequently, to increase the ra-
diation intensity, correction windings (correcting the azimuthal phase Inhomo-
geneities) and a magnetic contractor were used. The maximum energy of 25 Mev
was attained with the aid of a special winding compensating for the displacement
of the equilibrium orbit at the end of the accelerating cycle.

Title :Stimulation of Erythropoiesis by Hypoxia

Abstract :58 rats were kept for 72 hours at a barometric pressure of
400 mm Hg. The erythrocyte count rose by an avorage of
1,379,473 per cu. nm. and the retioulocytes by 11.44
percent. Transection of the cervical segment of the
spinal cord did not produce an erythrocytic reaction (ER).
Partial compression of the aorta also did not lead to ER.
Erythrocytosis was seen following ligation of the
innominate artery with the cerebral ischemia which attended
this. It is not known whether 02 deficiency acts directly
on the nerve centers which play a role in the regulation

An erythrocytic reaction was evoked by induction of hypoxia in 5 groups of rats
(using a different method in each group). and the serum proteins were examined.
The total protein content rose to 20% (except in the group with posthaemorrhagic
anaemial. the albumins decreased by 5.7 -2 1% (except in the posthaemorrhagic
anaemia group with reinjection of serum)theoz- .$- and -y- globulins did not show
any appreciable change. and the &,-globulins increasqd by amounts up to 86% in

pcrmits uniform and constant distribution of the sample. The platinum electrodes
are placed inside Berkfeld filters, maintaining a constant pH in the paper and
avoiding excessive diffusion of the buffer solution. The electric field is reduced
exclusively to the surface of the paper for separation of fractions. A sample of
0.3-0.8 ml. serum can be fractionated in 24 hr.

Abstract: The introduction of adrenalin constantly induced
an increase of all vascular reflexes. After pre-
liminary administration of barbiturates, as well
as in diseases of the nervous system connected
with hypothalamic lesion, the effect of adrenalin
was absent. This data indicates the adaptation of
the adrenalin effect to the hypothalamic vasoraotor
centers. An effect of adrenalin on the cortical
centers is also possible, since it also acts on
conditioned vascular reflexes. -- I. M. Sheyman.

Summarization of about 5,000 experiments with anti-D(Rh ) sera. The sera were
produced partly by nierctansfusions of D-positive citra?ed 'blood te D-negative
women sensitized by pregnance and men sen'sitized by transfusicn, partly by
immunization of rats. The incidence of D-negativeness in Hungary was found to
be abcut 17%.
