Abstract An investigation was made of a spark discharge in a 230
cm gap in air using
* 5,000 ohm "braking" resistor in the spark circuit.. The
discharge charged
* metfllic rod 0.4 cm diameter and 50 cm. high (a6gative in
electrodes), which
was grounded through a 400 ohm resistor. Oscillograms were taken
of the cur-
rent int.the rod and the discharge was photographed with the aid
of a Kerr
electro-optical shutter. The principal canal was formed when two
leaders,
growing from the upper and lower rods, met. The point where the
leaders meet
depends on the height of the lower rod (lightning arrester). The
positive
leAder has considerably brighter glow than the negative. The
principal canal
propagates from the point where the leaders meet in both sides
with equ*l
velocity. The head of the principal cana-1 first increases its
speed rapidly
after formation and then slows down. The'speed reaches a maximum
of 5,1 x iOB
cm.2/sec when the principal canal is 25 cm away from the place
of formation;

in! action of such discharge to be due to'the fission of molecules

intthe zone of micro-spark discharges into reactive free atoms and
raaicals, an attempt is made to obtain'an approximate exprqssion
describing the rates of such polymerizations. Inelastic collisions
in the discharge zone may lead to excitation and dissociation, and
to ionization. It is proposed that the formation of free radicals
is mainly governed by monomolecular dissociations, bimolecular
collisions, ionization by electron impacts and photoionization.

conductance of a 20-1" thick polystyrene film were measured at various
temperatures

film was stretchec
on a metal electrode, and a second metallized-glass electrode was
brought in contact

discharges in air near the film surface cause abrupt deterioration of
