TITM Reduced alpha-partiole width* of bismuth 210 and the energy level spectrum of thallium 200 LRoport 14th Annual Conference on Nuclear Spectroscopy hold In, Tibillsi 14-21 Fab lg;;) SOME: AN SSSR. Xxv. Geriya fislohookaya, v.28, no.7, 1904, 1229-1233 TOPIC TAGS: radloactivityo alpha decay, nuclear spectroscopy, nuclear force, bis- muth, thallium ABSTRACT: The reduced widths wore calculated for alp4a decay of the ground state and the 250 koV 9- excited state of DIM to the foll6wing states of T1206: the 2- and 3- states at 800 and 654 MY (not necessarily ieepectively), the 301 key I- r-tato, the 262 koV 2- state, And a hypothetical low-lying 1- state. The methods am-' ployed have boon previously described by the authors (Izv.AN SSSR,Ser.vix.27,1297, 190, 28,102,1904). The calculations were undertaken primarily to determine whether the failure so far to observe alpha transition to the low-lying 1- state is compoll-, Ing proof of its non-existenco, as argued by II.D.Zoh and H.I.Mang (Nucl.Physs29, 1/3 - ------ ---- 1 ACCESSION MR: AP4042969 520,1962). This question Is pf slomo importance, for it involves. tho- existence or non-oxistonce of tonsor forces in the residual nuclear interactions. The descrip_ tion of the nuclei given by L.A.SlIv, G.A.Sogomap'ova and Yu.1.10inritonov (Zhur. eksp.i toor.fiz.40,946,19G1;,Izv.AH SSSR,Ser *tiz.28,315,1964) gn tho basis of the shell modol with central residual forces was employod In the calculationq. Accord- Ing to this model, the l9west states of T120G nrR those of n PI/2sl/2 (0.1) doublet' with. very amall separation, and the ground state, of B1210 is a, mixture of many con- figuratlons of which ill/2)1~ /2 and C,,q _/2119/2 predominate. The reduced widths for transitions fron either of the two bismuth states to the low-lying I- thnilium. state were found to be r,.iuch smaller than the other rLduced widths. The relative in-: tensities of the nipha tran,41tions were ca1c.ulated from the reduced widths and the birrier penetration fnctortt, and they are compared with the experimental results. Excallont agreemont was found for the tratisitiotfs to the 262 and 301 keV thallium lovoln. For the 654 and 800 keV lovelB, the intensity ol the tran!jition to one (do-, persding on the asaignmont) was In good agreeneitt with vxporitwnt, and that to tho other was off by a factor 4. Vie calculations indicate that nbout 3% of thu alpha transitions from the excited bismuth state should be to the low-lyIng 1- thallium level. 71to trnnnition probabIlity was -givon by the calculationa, ho'novor, us the 2.M ACCESSION NH: AP4042969 difference between two lorgv~ numbers., and it might well be In fa--t touch smaller. IfI one Ignores configuration mixing and employs pure shell model states irvtho calcu- lotions, as did Zeh and Mang (loc.cit) one finds a much larger transititut probabi- lity. -It In concluded that the expertmontal data are not inconsititont with the ex-1 Jitonco of a low-lying I- level In T1200. The influence of the residual Interaction and of the structure of the levels of the parent and daughter nuclei on the relative values of the alpha-decay amplitude is investigated. The calculations employed take into account the dynamics of the In- ternml motion and explain in natural fashion many details of alpha, decay, providing ,&.batter.understanding of the connection between Its characteristic and the energy and electromagnetic characteristics of the nuclei, It is shown that in addition to pp and nn interactions, an important role In played by np Interactions In the cor- Cordl/2 L 203~,2-66 q,ACC NRt A16W5871 relation of the four nucleons into an alpha cluster* The fact that the authors !used the wave functions obtaintd by L. A. Sliv and his co-workers (ZhVTF V. 36j. '539y 1959; Noel. Physs ve 28j, 192p 19W) without additional assumptions or new para- meterBp offers evidence that these functions represent with sufficient accuracy the: ~propertles of the nucleus as a systft- of interacting nucleons. The results show Ahat the study of alpha decay yields valuable information on the structure of the :nuclear levels and the character of the residual Interaction on the nucleons. (Kiev) TITLE: Plastic deformation of hard alloys I"'-.RIODICj%: Prykladna mekhanika, v. 9, no. 1, 1963, 94-98 T Z_X T : Since, hard alloys are widely used as materials for instrument and machine-component construction, a study of their plastic properties is of considerable technological as well as theor- etical value. 1%0 existing infonftation on this problem being limited and scattered, the authors use a method based on the uneven compres- sion of hoops to study the plastic defoniation of two-phase turgsten carbide - cobalt alloys. The cobalt content varies fron, 4 to 25%. The residual defommation is shoim to be considerable, being 1179 for the 4'~ Co alloy, 9.5% for the 6"" Co alloy, and then increasing to 18.5'~ for 25" Go. The effect of defoniation on the hcwdneso, coer- 1 to cive force and specific conductivity is also sho-wn; the hardness decreases after deformation but the other two parameters increase. Further investigations of the effect of deformation will be carried out vrith the aid of X-rays, metallography and assay- ing. There are 2 figures and 2 tables. The results of the measurements show that the expression for the complex conductivity of plasma derived by Fange is applicable to the positive column of a DC glow discharg*, It is also shown that the measurements can also be analysed by means of the Lorenz formula which is simpler for numer- ical calculations, The electron concentration ovaluated from this formula in (within the range of experimental error) similr to that calculated from the Fange expression.
