TITLE: Indus4rial Production of Sodium Chlorite
PERIODICAL: Xhimicheskaya promyshlennost', 1960, No. 4, pp. 72-75
TEXT: The authors have worked out and tested a scheme for the continuous
production of chlorine dioxide and sodium chlorite from sodium chlorate.
Methanol and hydrogen peroxide are used for reduction in the first and
second stage, respectively. Chlorine dioxide In obtained In three
successively operating steel vessels (7), lined with diabase and having
an attachment of Raschig rings. A mixture of a sodiumchlorate solution and
25-35% methanol is gradually heated as it passes through the reactioll
vessels (from 60 to 800C). The residue from the last vessel Is discharged.
The resulting chlorine dioxide is diluted with air until an explosion-
proof concentration is reached (not more than 10~). The diluted chlorine
dioxide is then passed into a caacade-of three absorbers of the bubbling

type (8). 30% hydrogen peroxide in passed into all three absorbers, and
an alkaline solution with a concentration of 160 g1l is pcured into the
last absorber. Temperature is maintained at 0-20C. Sodium-chlorite
solutions with a content of 140-16o g11 NaC102, 15-20 g11 NaGl,
30-40 9/1 Na2CO3, and 0.5-1.0 9/1 H202 are obtained after absorption.
Sodium chlorite in evaporated in vacuo between 70 and 800C. Subsequently,
the sodium-chlorlte solution (concentration: 350-400 g1l) to passed
through a crystallizer (14) with a temperature of -5 to -1000 and then
filtered by a auction filter. The initial solution may be used again,
while the sodium chlorite may be put at the consumer's disposal. Only an
absolutely dry product can,',be stored in sealed containers for several
years. Sodium chlorite can be dried either in a vacuum drying apparatus
at 70-BOOC or with the use of dry air in a boiling layer at room
temperature. The last-mentioned method appears to be more promising.
Dried commercial, sodium chlorite contains 80-85~ NaClO,, 10-12% NaCl, and
5-6% Na2COg. The method suggested Is undanaeroue and very convenient,
provided t 9 production prooess is cerefully checked and technical.
specifications are strictly observed. The concentration of chlorine
dioxide in the reaction.,gas was measured with an automatic photo-

colorimeter provided with 4>KC -r-1 (FKS-14) photoresistors. The process is
automatically checked and controlled by measuring the redox potential
with a couple of platinum (iridium)-calomal electrodes. The potentials
were recorded by an qnA (EPD) potentiometor, The formation of sodium
ohlorite may be determined from the redox potential. The method of
potentiometrio checking is recommended for use in the automation of
industrial plants producing sodium chlorite. An automatic photocalori-
rotor is recommended for the determinftion of the concentration of
chlorine dioxide. There are:3 figures,, 1 table, and 8 non-Soviet
