ABSTRACT: The effect of changing the concentration of surface active substances in
rinse solutions during nickel plating was studied. Nickel plating was carried out in
an electrolyte containing (9/1): HiSO471120--300, H003-30, Nar--6, NaCl--15, sodium
salt--2.6 to 2.7 and disulfonaphtalenic acid--4. The platiniz conditions were 0.75
a/dM2 at pH=5.5_5.9. Prior to nickel plating, samples were rinsed in OP-7 (a surface
active product of the reaction of 7 mol of ethylene oxide and a mixture of mono- and
dialkylphenols) solutions ranging in composition from 0.1 to 2.5 g/l. The surface
tension and the nurra~er of bends to flaking of the coating droped sharply with concen-
tration, leveling off at 1.0 g/1. The number of pores per cm dropped sharply from

600 to 200 at 1.0 g/l and Increased again to 500 at 2.0 g/1. The region of change in
surface tension with concentration corresponded to surface active additions in tile so-I
lution itself, while the leveling off corresponded to behavior in colloidal solutions.
The decrease in porosity and the lowering of nickel adhesion was caused by the forma-
tion of adsorption layers of a surface active substance on the plating surface. The
increase in porosity with further increases in concentration was due to the formation
of micelles in the solution, the adsorption of which resulted in thick irregularities
in the layer. The influence of temperature and heating time on coating adhesion was
significant. The nickel plated samples were heated at 100, 200 and 3000C for periods
from 1 to 5 hrs. Little change in porosity was noted although the adhesion improved
fourfold by heating 1-1.5 hrs at 30014C or 3 hra at 2500C. The porosity decreased
sharply with an increase in coating thickness from I to 5p. By heat treating, the po-
rosity was improved somewhat as a result of the coalescence of pores-, however, the

substituted tpiahlorohydrInes were prepar4d. The pre#ont work demonstrates
the possibility of preparation of spiahlerohydrinse from olatines obtained
by petroleum oracking. Epiohlerohydrine is used for the production of
spoxide resins, whioh are important for the manufacture of varicus
plastion and. similar materials. The characteristics cf the obtained di-
chlorohydrines and substituted opichlorohydrines are presented In Tab. 1,
2. Hypoohlorination of the chloroallyl compounds was carried cut with
saidifi:d (H,SO,) aqueous solution of monoohloro-oarbamide u ing CuCl as
catalys and sh king the mixture by keeping the temperature :t a MAILL;
of 15-170C. By shaking with water the diahlorohydrinot were separated
from impurities, whioh remained in the oil phase. After saturation with
NaCl the diohlorohydrines were ottraoted with other. Hypechlorination of
3-ohloro-2-mothylpropene-1 and 3-chloro-2-athylpropens-2 yields isomers
(I and II in Tab. 1) with the struoture of a tertiary sloohol, while in
hypoohlorination of 3-chloro4-mothylbutono-l and T-ohloro 2-m:thylbuteno-2
besides tertiary dichlorohyar4ne (III) primary (IV) and se;ond ry (V) di-
ohlorohydrines are formed, 'ah aro apparently atnormal products of

addition of hypoohlorous acid. The yield of diohlorohydrines varies from
50 to 64%. It was observed that abnormal chlorination occurring during
hypoohlorination is a single reaction, since no products of hypoohlorins-
tion were isolated. This is in agreement with observations by A. Umnova
(Ref 61 ZhRFXhO, 42, 1530 (1910)). From dichlorohydrines the substituted
spiohlorohyarines were prepared with a 8^10 KOH solution. According'to

Abstract : The vascular network in the nuclei of the trifacial nerve of
91 cats was studied by silvering according to Kosovsky and
injection of the carcass with gelatin. 'The nerve cells were
stained by the Nisel method. In comparing nevly-born kittens
with grown cats.. the number of nerve cells In the grown cats
which come in contact with the-capillaxies was found to in-
crease considerably. The progressive similarity with growth
in explained by increase In the thickness of the vascular
network in the nuclei of the trifacial nervep which occurs

of the vascular network in these nuclei ends at two months.
The development of individual capillaries canp however..
still be seen in 5-monthold animal . Tvo periods of in-
tensive now formation of vessels in the nuclei of the tri-
facial nerve are noted. In the earlier one the maximum devel-
opment falls on the 10th day of life; the seond is related
to the last 5 days of the first month. Vigorous development
of capillaries in the 10-day old kitten coincides with open-
ing of the eyesp m&W parts of which are served by the tri-
facial nerve* Dmprovemant in the vascularization of its
nuclei at the and of the first month is related to the tram -
ition of the Ani-I from maternal milk feeding to independent
nutrition.

For reactivation of the depressed enzyme, l,l-trimetbylene-bie-(4-form*
pyridine-bromide)dioxime (TMB-4) was opplied, Erythrocytes were
incubated with the depressant for 30 minutes# then reactivated with
TRE-4 and various amounts of thiourea. Preably depressed enzyme was
completely reactivated b THB-4; if the enzyme had been aged for 3 hours,
this persisted with TMB-~ only for the DFF Inhibitor, Added thiourea*
at a final 0*2 M concentration, depressed reactivability in all cesesp
1o990 it accelerated aging, This is assumed to result from dealkylation
Thiourea was added to specimens and Its effect tested after 5-180
minutes. This was found to be directl-y related to concentration and
duration* It was concluded that these tests confirm the Initial

TEM Three laboratory-type electronic computers are presently opera-
tive in Poland. The "XYZ" computer (about 800 operations/sec) at the
Zakl'ad aparat~w matematycraych PAN (Computer Department of the Polish
Academy of Sciences), the electronic digital computer 421C" (about 100
operations/sec) at the Zakkad konstrukcji telekomunikatyjnych i radio-
fonii "ZKTR" (Tolecommunicat ions and Ra%71ophony Designing Department)
of the Politechnika Warazawska (Warsaw Polytechnik lustitute), and the
"ENAL 211 computer at the Instytut badail j1drowych (Nuclear Research
Institute). Apart from these three computlers, the "UNC 111 (a twin of
the "ENCII), the prototype of a mass-production model, began operation
in May 1961. The IIZAM 211 computer, a relative of the XYZ, will become

operative in the near futures Still during 1961t Poland will import a
Soviet "Ural 211 computer for the Centrainy oArodek oblicteniowy PAN
(Main Calculation Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences)e It belongs
to the category or rast computers for mathematical calculation. Tech-
nical data: up to 12,500 additions, up to 2,000 multiplications and up
to 1,200 divisions per second on 12 digit numbers. The ferrite storage
memory has a capacity of 2,000 digits, the drums 8,000 each, the magnetic
tape 100,000 words on a 250 meters dine, printing speed - 20 digits per
second. Research on the comtruction and application of Polish digital
computers for data processing is in progress. It is intended to build
electronic systems of computers in Poland while exterior equipment will
be imported. By 1965 a large digital computer 11ZAM 311 comparable to the
British "Orion", and 11AMC11 business machines. will be built at the Warsaw
Polytechnic Institute, Upon completion of prototypes, the "Elwroll Plant
in Wroclaw will start production of the computers. The rest of the
article is an elementary outline of world trends in computer design.
