Title : The Eoetvoes Equation (on the Measurement of the Free
Energy of
Liquid Surfaces)
Orig Pub: Zap. Leningr. Gorn. In-ta, 1956, Vol 32, No 3,
97-119
Abstract: On the basis of a thorough study of the Eoetvoes
equation Cr (Mv)2/3
- K(Tc-T) - 2.12 6 T (1) and similar equations proposed by
other
investigators as well as on the basis of the concept that
molecules
in the surface film are restricted in their freedom of
movement, i.e.
lose a given number of degrees of freedom, the author
proposes to
write equation (1) in the form: -,;' Sm - 2 (z-i)R ZS T (2),
where
Sm is the area per mole of substance in the film and z and i
are the
degrees of freedom of the molecules in the vapor and in the
film,
respectively; R is the gas constant. The author concludes
that the

magnitude of,6 T/G' , which is proportional to Sm, better expresses
the structure of the oriented molecules in the film that does the
deviation of the constant K in equation (1) from its normal value.
On the basis of the above presented considerations, curves of the
type
A T/ (~r a f ( 6 ) ( 0 - T/Tc) have been plotted, and the values of
Sm for members of homologous series of ethers, alcohols, acids,
amines,
and hydrocarbons as well as for simple inorganic molecules have been
calculated. It is shown that in all the series SM increases with the
chain length, thus pointing to a plane orientation of the chains in
pure liquid films (with a few exceptions), notwithstanding the Lang-
muir hypothesis. The magnitude of K in equation (1) is constant
within
each series and differs for mono-, di-, and polyatomic molecules. It
is shown that equation (2) leads to values for S. which are in good
agreement with data published in the literature. The shape of the
curves A T/Ivs. 0 makes it possible to estimate the degree of
associa-
tion between the molecules of the liquid and its change with T.

Abstract: Reviews the importance of animal breeding for the
national economy and the importance of the state farms that
specialize in animal production. Proposes for adoption such
measures as the improvement of animal strains, the
introduction
of new strains, the extension of artificial insemination,
the
reduction of losses caused by epizooties, mechanization,
and
the application of scientific feeding and care methods.
Traces
the evolution of animal husbandry in the state farms and
cites
some results, pointing out that from 1956 to 1962 the
stock of
large cattle increased by 2.9 times and the value of total
pro-

ABSTRACT: Type VMR380, 380- kV, 1,200-amp,
12,000-Myalow-oil-content
circuit breakers developed by ChKD plants (Czechoslovakia)
are described.
These circuit breakers are final in the series of breakers
manufactured for
voltages from 3-kv. The circuit breaker consists of three
identical poles
connected only electrically. Each pole is mounted on a welded
support frame
on which two support tripods of pin-type insulators are
arranged- Each tripod
carries on its top two V-shaped arc -rupturing devices.
Uniform voltage
distribution is assured by a capacitive divider whose current
as high as a few

Low-Oil Content ChKD 380-kv Circuit Breakers
ma can be cut off by a conventional disconnecting switch.
The circuit breaker
is closed by a pneumatic actuator, and is opened by springs.
One of the
insulator stacks of each tripod can rotate about its axis.
It is connected on
the bottom with the pneumatic actuator and on the top with
an arc-rupturing
contact mechanism and transmits the motion from the former
to the latter.
Each of the two arc-rupturing devices carries a common oil
gauge. The
insulator stacks are equipped with guard rings. Each pole is
7,700-mm long,
7,250-mm high; the circuit breaker weighs about 19,000 kg.
Its wet test
50-cps voltage is 30 kv (?), its impulse test voltage is 1,
450 kv with 1/50
microsec wave.

Abstract: The author describes the results of spraying the water in an
arm of the Danube river with the insecticide Toxaphene. The process
of poisoning the fishes is described; the young fish die before the
older ones. During summer a concentration of 0.2 ppm kills all the
fishp
in winter 0,3 ppm are required* The autbor used poisoning to count
the dead fish and determine the species, their weights and other
characteristics- 3 Figures, 4 Tablesp 12 Westernp 10 Czechp 4 Russian

ABSTRACT: Operation of blast furnaces located in southern USSR that
operate with increased gas pressures (IGP) is described, also
procedures for the maintenance of equipment and :.:,uxiliary de-
vices and certain peculiarities of the smelting process. Irvest-
i8ations have shwxn that the depth of the oxidizing zone dimin-
ishes when IGP are employed; the temperature of the shaft lin-
ing at the upper and lower levels is reduced. the pressure drop
between the tuyeres and the charging hopper is also reduced,
the greatest pressure losses occurring in the lower and upper
sections of the furnace; smooth operation of the furnace is
achieved; this makes it possible to conduct smelting operations
with smaller heat reserves and the re~iulting pig iron (ontiins

Opeyation of Blast Furnaces Under Increased Gas Pressures
Variations in the distribution of the materials at the hopper affect
the pres-
sure losses which occur between the hopper and the second level,
whereas
variations in the temperature and volume of the blast influence the
magnilude
of losses between the second level and the tuyeres. This fact makes
it pos-
sible to control the pressure drop between the tuyeres and the
second level
by regulating the temperature and the volume of the blast, while the
pressure
drop between the second level and the hopper is controlled by
varying the pres-
sure at the hopper. The establishment of this relationship permits
the utili-
zation of the static pressure for the automatic regulation of the
operation of
the furnace. The employment of IGP (up to 0.5-0.6 at gas pressure)
increased
the output by 6-81/6, the efficiency of the smelting process by
5.5-6.0%, and
reduced the consumption of coke by 1.2-2.5%; the amount.of dust
carried off
was reduced by 20-40%.

2085. THE USE OF LOCAL COOLING IN RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY
(Russian text) -.B a I o n L. R - VESTN. KHIR. 1957.
78/6 (95-100) Illus. 8
In the first postoperaliVe days owing to impairment of
circulation the local tissue
metabolism has to depend on the nutrient components
stored in cells and inter-
stitial spaces. Every local rise of temperature leads
to acceleration of the com-
bustion of these rests before the development of the
vascular bed has taken place.
Local cooling reduces the metabolism rate and the
nutrients in store last a longer
time thus helping the tissues to restore their blood
supply. The circulatory dis-
turbance in so-called 'blue flaps' is found to promptly
subside when treated by
cooling. A great number of observations suggest the
inadvisability of the applica-
tion of heat in the first postoperative days; it should
not be used before the 10th,
12th. 14th day by which time the vascular bed will have
formed. The method of
cooling is described and the outcomes are presented.
